I am looking for a starting load that might propel a 429650 (320 grains) slug at approximately 700-800 fps from a 9.5” SRH.

The Lyman 48th lists slow velocity loads at around 900 fps and that is from a 4” barrel. The fastest powders they list are 800X, 4756, and Herco. Anyone make a suggestion as to a faster powder that might allow a small charge (maybe suggest a starting charge) to accelerate the 429650 at velocities listed above. Thanks…BCB

I would try between 4 and 5 gns of 700x.
A quick look at quickload suggests results between 730 and 830fps.
FWIW

Thanks—that is just what I was looking for…

Just loaded a few up at 4.0 and 5.0 grains of 700X and shot them over the Chrony. Interesting…The 4.0 grain load averaged 608 fps and the 5.0 grain load averaged 779 fps. That’s a 171 fps increase with the single grain of powder. Amazing what just 1.0 grain of powder can do—but we all knew that, didn’t we?...

I've been thinking about getting that quickload program and everytime I see results of what it indicates, I am closer to purchasing it...BCB

For Revolvers in quickload, I have to adjust the barrel length until I get the actual recorded velocities. I generally add about 1.5" for revolvers. I can then use that barrel length for that gun to get real close estimations for other loads.
At $150 it is expensive, but I like it.
