.357- will it handle 180grain boolits?
I have an NOE brass 180 WFN that I think would be great in this gun if it will stabilize them.
What do you think?

The Rossi twist rate for the 38/357 is 1:30

I have the Mihec version of the original Lee GB developed by Glenn. I believe that's the same boolit you're referring to. Anyway, mine is in the pb hp format. So far in doing load development for my Rossi 92 357 I have found that it shoots accurately down to 750-800 fps at the muzzle out to 100 yards. 100 yards is the furthest I have tested it and 750-800 fps is the slowest I have gone.

I am quite surprised, to say the least. Getting it to reliably feed was another issue...

I loaded up a dummy round and had issues with it feeding as well. I will be running 400-600 jacketed rounds through it first to try and help "break it in"
The gun even hangs up a bit with j words.
I'm guessing lots of burrs and rough edges. What's your load outdoor fan?
I was gonna try 2400 or 296 to start.

Yes, I do think these lever guns need some break-in to function properly. Nevertheless, that boolit had no chance of feeding in my Rossi. I had to manually (with a hand file) work the cartridge guides back QUITE a bit. Ranch Dog, over on Rossi Rifleman, has a short "how-to" on that in the gunsmithing section. I did the same thing, and it worked wonders for me. I also used a dremel to give the chamber opening a little bit of a feed ramp, similar to what Junior Doughty, in his tutorial, did to his Rossi.

Mine's pretty tricked out by now. I've made it way much more better!

Loads:

I would have been done by now, but it took me awhile to figure out that the stupid NcStar scope that I had on it was bad.

My low end/quiet load is either 3.2 grains of Red Dot or 3.8 grains Unique. That's good for approx. 800 fps out of the 16" tube. Sounds about like a standard 22 lr, or a tad louder.

On the high end I will either use 2400, H110, or Lilgun. I haven't dialed that in yet. BTW, Lilgun will reach 1800 fps with that boolit in its solid configuration (190 grains), with one of Pat Marlins pb gas checks installed, of course.

The Lyman 66a receiver peep sight will allow me to switch between the two. I will actually probably have a load more in the 1000-1100 fps range as my main load, but I haven't gotten that far yet.

BTW, I fire lapped mine right off the bat before I even shot it. I'm anal about those things, and I wanted maximum potential right away.

I'm shooting the NOE 358429 that drop at about 172 gn for magnum loads with 14.5gn W296 [lowest load] and SMPP out to 150 yds with good grouping of less than a foot. For my old eyes i think it's preety good. Dont have my data in front of me so no OAL but useing a heavy crimp in the crimping grove.
My alloy is preety hard at around 18BHN and With that load it's right around 1600 FPS and i get almost no leading.
I haven't got the 357s to feed good yet but 38s feed like butter and also did a spring kit and mag tube follower, stoned the action and whooee did it make a difference, Shells drop within 3 feet of me and some times on top of my head.

I am shooting a Lyman 358429 (drops 168 gr for me) over 15.0 gr H110 and a SP primer. Load chronies 1750 fps MV. I load them in 357 brass and crimp over the forward drive band. Cycles nicely. Stock cartridge guide.

I use a cast 180 gr TC bullet and it works great in the 357 Mag Rossi. Should be no problem.

a lot of them just need to be pulled down and cleaned up,
they leave a few rough edges here and there and aren't so good about getting the cutting oil and such off their parts.

The early Rossi rifles from Puma, Interarms and EMF and other owners were very slick after a good cleaning. If you want to know how to break your gun down and make it like butter then contact Steve Young AKA Nate Kiowa Jones. He is a full time gunsmith out of Port Arthur Texas. He is known in the cowboy shooting sports as the 92 Guru. He sells parts and a DVD for your rifle. If your skill level is at least 2 steps from bottom it is not a problem. Later David

Dose anyone know If the 1-30 rifling will stabilize a 200 grain bullet?

I'd like to try a extra heavy boolit in my new Rossi

The longer boolits in 38+P+ cases should feed ok I'm thinking.

what would you guys say the ideal twist rate is for a .357?

would it make a difference for twist ratio between a rifle and pistol.

1 in 30 is about spot on for the 357,for some reason most 357 revolvers have a much faster twist, this has never made sence to me as the faster the twist the longer the bullet needs to be, or the velocity droped very low

It depends on the bullet weight and velocity you want to run at. S&W and Ruger run about 18/1 and Colt was 16/1 in their 38/.357 revolvers. Those twists do a pretty good job of covering the bullet wts in the .38/.357 which run from about 100 grs to 200 grs and velocities from 700 fps to1400 fps. IMO the Rossi would be better served with something in the 18-20/1 range but they work pretty good with their 30/1. Where they fail is with .38 velocities along with heavy (160 gr and up) bullets at longer ranges. It is not that big a deal for most folks because most of shooting is done at 50 yds or less and the slow twist doesn't show up till about the 100 yd mark and beyond. Again I'm talking heavy bullets at low velocity, 1000-1100 fps. Once you kick the speed up as in mag loads 1500-1700 fps the 30/1 twist works fine at 100 yds and beyond. The 30/1 twist works great with light bullets(120-130 gr) at low velocities and that's what I use for most of my plinking at longer ranges. It's all about velocity and bullet weight. If you had a 30/1 twist in a .38 revolver the standard .38 spl load of a 158 gr bullet@ 800 fps would probably be very inaccurate and tumble before 50 yds.

I have noticed the pistol silowett shooters that are wining with the 357 have changed to a slower twist even for the 200gr + bullets.Bullet weaight realy has nothing to do with twist rates it is bullet lenth and velocity,eg you can have a light bullet with a large hollow point that is long enough to stabilise in a fast twist barrel but a solid bullet of the same weaight is to short to stabilise at the same velocity in that barrell

For some reason the Mihec 180 RF is accurate to at least 100 yards (furthest I have tested it) at a lowly 750-800 fps muzzle out of my Rossi 357.

I was speaking in generalities and in general heavier bullets are longer than lighter ones in the same caliber.

The NOE 180 RF would tumble at 100 yds at anything under max out of either of my 2 Rossi's and the Lyman 358429 173 gr needed to be run max to work well at 100. I'm glad for you the Mihec works. My most accurate bullets out of the Rossi's have been the Lee 125 RF and the 9MM 120 TC in the 1100-1300 fps range.

Yeah, I can't explain it. These guns should all be the same, right?

I size to .359. This boolit is a pb design. With that big HP it weighs 180 grains. My gun is firelapped, if that matters any.

For some reason I have found the long hollow point bullets will stabilise when a solid of the same lenth will not in the slow twist barrels,I have no explenation for this

I looked back in my loading records and I found that I have not tried the 180 RF boolit at those low speeds in the solid format. I thought I had. I have shot them with the big hp (pictured) and the small hp (about 183 grains). I need to try them as solids just to see.
