What causes my lead to have a covering of a real pretty blue-gold color on top of my melt?

Shinny metal will take on the color cast you've described at around 500F.

I had the same thing happen early on in my casting career while smelting WW's. It was waaaay to hot. Do you use a thermometer? I use one for both smelting and casting.
