Do we lube for the bullet that is traveling down the barrel, or the one that's to follow?

Yes. I think. Maybe.

Seriously, the "seasoning" of the bore, where a consistent lubricated condition is achieved dose mean a lot. That's where the "fouling shot" or two comes into play.

Yes we do. I don't believe anyone really knows tho there are hundreds of theories. I believe a good lube does both.

Why would it matter?

Interesting question. So many of the high speed videos I've seen of bullets or boolits exiting barrels show the projectile coming out after flash and blast. Makes me wonder about the whole issue of bore sealing and the mechanics of boolit lube utilization.

This makes wonder a well. I some of the gas we see is the bullet pushing the air out of the barrel ahead of it, but some shots look like a lot more than what the barrel could hold. Someone needs to put a camera in a ported barrel and get a good look....:)

I bet the piston moving down the barrel is pushing air ahead of it.

In that case, here is a possible test protocol:

Alternate shots on two targets. One target gets lubed bullets. The other unlubed bullets.

If the target getting unlubed bullets is just a good as the target with lubed bullets we can say the lube may be effective at conditioning the barrel for the next bullet.
