I have a Lyman mold #350447 and my old Lyman casting book says it is for the 348 Winchester and that it is a gas check design. My mold has no provision for a gas check. If the gas check feature was removed it was very well done. It appears to me at least that the mold was never used and I don't remember where I got it. Does anyone know if Lyman ever offered this mold without the gas check?

Looking at the Lyman mold cherry number chart that is on castpics, that is supposed to be for a 183 gr FNGC. Have you cast any to see what they weigh? I can't find a good picture with my slow connection, but could it be one that was special ordered short with no GC shank?

MK, I have not cast with this mold but my old Lyman cast bullet handbook says it should weigh 185 gr. It also lists it as a gas check. I have never owned a 348 Winchester which I believe is the only thing it is used in. It may be a special order item as you said. I will probably put it up for sale with other molds I don't use.

I was wondering if that bullet might work well in the .351 Winchester Self Loading and was considering picking one up for my brother who has a 1907 Winchester.

Have you cast any with it? I'd be curious about the diameter. I know where one of these is, I might get it if it looks like it'll work in the .351.

Gopher Slayer,

Your pictures finally opened for me today, and I agree that mold does not look altered. It also doesn't look like it was short cherried, what with the thickness of the base band.

I bet ti would be a very good boolit, it reminds me of an RCBS 35-200-FN.

Richdog66,

I was wondering the same thing, if it would cast large enough I don't see why it wouldn't work.

There was at least one multi page thread that went on for a few years regarding the .351 WSL, you might look to see if anyone has used that mold for it.

It was designed for a .351 SL Winchester, should you end up wanting to part with it, please let me know.

I think that mold is designed for the .348 Winchester, but if it casts a few thousandths big, it might work in the .351.

My brother has a Model 1907 and I've had the itch to get one for a long time. I need to figure out how to make ammo for one.

351 Win SL brass usually takes a lathe to make. I'm doing it, but slowly, got to get the lathe process down pat. I do sell, as I'm a Type 06. Once the brass is made, the rest of the process is pretty much normal.

It is usually a GC mold. I used one to whack my first elk.
