I got the chance to buy a Brazilian Contract S&W 1917. It's from the 2nd batch supplied and has been refinished. It had a set of awful fake pearl ( i.e. plastic) grips so I replaced them with a set of reproduction walnut. Then I found an original WW I web belt. Also bought a reproduction holster and lanyard. I have a reproduction moon clip pouch on the way to complete the WW I looking setup.
The bore on this is pristine and it shoots to point of aim with Winchester White Box 230 gr. FMJ.

Nice find Larry. I wish I had never parted with the one I had. Lyman made a mould specifically for the 45 AR looks like a 45 acp round nose but has a crimp groove. I swapped it to the guy that got the Brazilian from me.

Still have one sold the other. One of the most fun guns with cast I have. Using the Lee 230 tc it shoots pretty close to the sights at 25 yds.

Nice. That ought to give you years of shooting pleasure.

I too have a Brazilian 1917. It also shoots to point of aim at 25 yards with my handloads. I use a 230 cast 45 ACP boolits from WWs or the hard cast commercial bullets with good success and virtually no leading in my 1917. I often use the Auto-Rim cases and as the ACP bullet design doesn't have a crimp groove, I place the crimp just past where the ogive starts on the boolit. That holds the projectiles in well. When using the rimless ACP case, I've been using plastic "Full Moon" clips that hold all six rounds so loading and unloading is a breeze.

While mine is holster worn, it's bore and forcing cone look new and it has about the smoothest double action pull of any of my Smiths. I did find the recoil pretty brutal with the issue stocks, so I put a modified N frame target stock on it. That makes it most manageable when shooting.

Yet another one of those "I wish I would have bought a pick-up load of those when they were first offed in the 1980's guns."

I bought several of them when they first came into the country and still have two. One was refinished by Smith and Wesson in their bright blue. It took some talking to get it done, and the other is blasted and blued. Both good solid sixguns. I gave my other one to my son. The blasted one is a 1st. contract and the bright factory blue is a 2nd. contract.
