Picked up a like new Remington 700 in 30-06 with a Leupold scope, sling, and everything for $300. I couldn't pass it up. I believe the guy said it was from the 80's and never shot, just put away, I got a good deal on another 30-06 that day too, but I wanted to concentrate on this one. I don't have any experience with model 700's they frankly never did much for me, but for some reason this one fits me real well, and seems to point good, I kind of like it, shiny stock and all (which has some good figure to it)...anyone have any advice for me and this gun/caliber combo.

It slugs at .308x

Here are my choices
3118
308291
311284
311-165RF (ranch dog)
and a Lachmiller 145 grain spire point design

Any loads or what have you will be appreciated for your 700. I almost bought a 1903 Colt, and an original 1911 from him too, but sadly he just passed this past week.

I was looking at the date code and it appears to be 1971 manufacture.

I like the gun, I am going to take it out this weekend hopefully. The other one is a brand new Parker Hale in 30-06 with a 24" barrel, I assume from this same time period. The PH had sat so long in a corner that it appeared the bore was corroded badly...I cleaned it yesterday I don't think a round was ever chambered in it, bright and shiny wonderful looking barrel. I chambered some old UMC bronze points in it and they put some new marks on her ramp. Sitting there for over 50 years and still new! I just ordered a mount and rings for it, I have had a Leupold scope in reserve for some time that will go on it. Less than $600 in these two gals!

I also just discovered a mold I thought had been lost or sold, a Saeco #308! That was a happy moment for me, almost as good as finding these two guns. Also found some match brass...I am all set. I found a couple hundred pounds of powder a few years back for a few bucks pound...life is good!

Hopefully they both will be shooters.

If this one is like mine get ready for a boring gun. Does the same thing over and over (at least with jacketed bullets).

For starters, you can't beat the Ranch Dog 311-165-RF in anything .30 caliber with 2400 powder.

Actually all my rems including 22's bore the heck out of me also...
