Many years ago, I got four 1-pound containers of Scot 453…

I have found data for it with the 357, 44, and 9mm, but none for the 45 Colt…

I was thinking of starting out using Bullseye data and working up…

Anyone see a problem with this?...

The burn rate charts seem to show it a bit slower than Bullseye…

Better yet, anyone know of a source of data for this powder and handguns?...

Thanks…BCB

Taken from a shootersforum post
http://www.shootersforum.com/handloading-procedures-practices/28779-scot-453-a.html

The Scot powder company made some great clean burning powders, including my favorite 30-06 powder, called Scot 4065. The name was to indicate it was just a little slower than IMR 4064. A fire destroyed the plant and the company felt it was not economical to replace. A plant at a different location continued to make some of their shotgun powders. These included Solo 1000, which is sold by Accurate in this country.

Unfortunately, Scot 453 was made in the destroyed plant. That's why it is only available surplus. It was intended to safely replace the old Winchester 452AA powder, and was made just a fraction slower to be safe that way. Hence the name, 453. You can see it following 452AA in this burn rate chart. Any 452AA loads you find in old loadbooks will work for Scot 453.

And there is this from the archives

I use Green Dot data for .44 Special and .45 Colt when using the Scot 453 powder and that seems to work well...Ray

hope this helps you out or at least steers you in the right direction

dagunnut,

Good information…

Thanks…

I am going to load a few 45-270-SAA using light charges of Green Dot and the same charge of Scot-453…

Shoot them across my Chrony and decide from there as to its closeness to the burn rate of Green Dot…

I can then “manipulate” from there…

A closer look at several burn rate charts does put it very near or next to Green Dot…

I printed the post and place it in my 45 Colt folder...

Thanks again…

Tested a couple of dozen rounds today using Scot-453 and Green Dot, an RCBS 45-270-SAA, and a Blackhawk…

6.5 grains of each powder…
Green Dot…727 fps
Scot-453…740 fps

7.0 grains of each powder…
Green Dot…828 fps
Scot-453…800 fps…

With the 6.5 grain charge, Scot-453 is 13 fps faster…

With the 7.0 grain charge, Scot-453 is 28 fps slower…

Likes like Green Dot might be the “perfect” data to use with Scot-453 and the 45 Colt…
