I was able to pick up a couple lbs of this today. Anyone have any favorite loads in 308win. I like to use 200gr boolits. Just shooting steel and paper.

I could not find any loads in my manuels for a 200 gr. boolit using IMR-4198. I did find one load in Ken Waters' Pet Loads. That load was using a 160 gr. Lyman 311291 boolit with 20 gr. of IMR-4198. Velocity was 1,661 fps and Waters listed it as his most accurate cast boolit load.

IMR-4198 is my favorite 45-70 powder. Great accuracy with 300, 350, & 400 gr. cast boolits and jacket bullets.

I've used H-4198 quite a bit in the 308 with 150gr bullets for reduced power loads for young shooters. The accuracy has been excellent, and I've driven them to velocities in the 2,600 fps range. I found data in the Hodgdon 25th edition data manual. Keep in mind the following data is for H-4198, not the IMR-4198 you have asked about. The same manual shows 29.0gr starting load for 1,849 fps in a 14" handgun barrel with a 200 gr jacketed bullet. The top load listed with a 200 gr bullet is 31.0 grains for a velocity of 1,935 fps in the same 14" barrel. This data is in the handgun silhouette section of the above mentioned manual. Most of my work with this powder was in a 26" barreled rifle and 150gr bullets. My results exceeded the Hodgdon results by around 300 fps. There may be data available for the IMR version published but I'm not sure where it might be. Looking for handgun silhouette data in the .308 cartridge may help as the two 4198's are a little faster burning than is usually recommended in the .308 for rifle loads.
Good Luck, and I hope it works out as well for you as it has for me,
Rick

Tomme boy,

Pick up a copy of the Lyman cast bullet book. Lots of cast bullet loads listed there and a bunch of them could be used with "J" bullets with no safety issues.

It would not be listed in many of the "J" bullet loading manuals as it is not a powder choice that gives the best results with those companies products at the velocity levels they are dealing with.

Not a Bad powder, just one that won't get er done at the upper levels with many bullets.

I also have used it for the reduced loads needed for young or inexperienced shooters.

My 4th addition Lyman cast bullet book with a 200gr cast, gives a starting load of 20.5 grains - 1615fps and 18,300PSI - then a top listed load of 27.3gr - 1999fps and 35,300PSI..

Good powder and a place on most folks shelf for one use or another.

I use it in my Krag with 314299 at 208gr. There is data for 311284, which is close in weight, in Lyman cast bullet handbook. The spread is 18-28gr if I remember right so there is alot of room to work in and if you start low you could possibly extrapolate the data to the 308. You can also look at other rounds with similar case capacities and make that work for you.

I have the Lyman book already. Was just wondering if there is a "the load" for this powder like some of the others?

tomme boy,

"the load" sometimes happens, but many times because of each firearms individual likes and dislikes, it is many times just trial and error to find what works.

The mold maker for my current 45/70 mold, did provide me a powder # and load data, and it did work, just as he recommended.

However it just as likely wouldn't have.

Seems like your head the right direction with the Lyman Cast Bullet book already in hand.
