View Full Version : critique my mold design for my .357 mags

so, i was planing on getting a mold from tom at accurate molds, and i was planing on getting his 160 grain truncated cone with traditional lube grove.

i decided, while i do like the general design of the bullet, i wish it weighed more, so i made some modifications by adding length to the driving bands, and to the lube grove,

by some volume calculations, it will be around 175 grains.

however, this dose lengthen the bullet by .06 and take up more powder space.
how will this affect load data?

here is my drawing, its not really to scale, but its close.

thank you for your imput

I'd think you'd be OK, just work your loads up carefully & watch for pressure signs real close. Six hundredths of an inch isn't all that much, but if it's worrysome you can redraw with the GG's scooted down to keep case fill the same as long as you aren't that close to going over max OAL. But that's just my opinion.

Sorry for my ignorance.
What is the GG?

And I really don't want to make the nose any longer on this boolit

When crimped in the crimp grove, a loaded round will only be .035 from being flush with the cylinder in my colt trooper.

Thank you.

Up around here, we mean a GG is a grease groove. Not a bad looking design. Have you given any thought to a possible hollow point in this design?Robert

Send it here for refinement, easey drop, and you HP hardware installed.

thank you. but i cant really take credit from it, this is a slightly modified 36-160-S from tom at accurate molds.

i have thought of a hollow point conversion for the mold. however, it has a very small diameter nose, so, without shortening the nose inorder to increase the diameter i am not sure an effective hollow point could be made from it.

looks a lot like the 170gr silhouette boolit I have.

anyway you'll see it second from right in the 38 cal section.

wow, you are right, they look very similar.
it is my hope that this bullet will make a great "long range" .357 bullet, and an effective, low velocity plinking .38 special boolit.

It looks a lot like the Saeco version as well??

Another question

Would this boolit design be safe to use in a lever action rifle?

Or is the meplat to small?

Looks like you have plenty of meplat for tube magazine safety. Great minds and designs run in the same river.

I agree. The 30-30 bullets have a much smaller metplat than the bullet he designed.

okay, thanks.

i dont have a .357 mag rifle yet,
and i am not the biggest fan of lever actions,
but i might have to break down and get one.

not many other options out there..

that silhouette boolit will tip a 200 yd ram with a center or high hit and medium velocity.
you can push it up in a lever gun to 1600+ fps without much effort.
