View Full Version : Crimp cutting patch?

So I recently did up my first batch of .45-70 patched 405 grain boolits with my Lyman M die. Crimping sliced my patch every time.

I thought...this isn't an issue because the boolits are wrapped inside the case...right? I can't go without crimp because these are to be hunting rounds in my 1886.

Would the lee factory crimper work better or do I need to bother?

Use the FCD, using the crimp on the die will make everything you did worthless.
I only use the FCD now on all my patched loads.

The Lyman 45-70 taper crimp die works very well also. Especially if you cut some off the bottom so you can control the amount of crimp.

For my Max I use my sizing die with the guts removed after the cases are loaded to "crimp", actually to remove the flare so I can chamber easily. Can't say if I even need to crimp at all other than removing that flare but it works for me. GW

+1 on the FCD. Lee hit a home run on that one.

Okay, Lee FCD it is. I was hoping I could get by without.
