My 7.5" SBH in 44 mag shoots high with almost every load. I was reading an article over at lasc, and he was saying that all but the heaviest bullets shot high. Funny, I found a 200g RF w 10g of unique that hits POA at 25y. Anyway, with my rear sight bottomed out, and a hunting weight bullet, I've shot 255g-310g, I'm 6-8 inches high at 25y. Any ideas? The front blade is already pretty tall, going bigger inst a great option.

I'm not surprised that a 300 gr. bullet hits high. My 7.5" SBH will shoot 250's@ 1350 fps and still have room to go down on the sight but 300's were 6" high with the sight bottomed out. Heavy and slow is going to go high due to the long barrel time and the barrel rise during recoil. I don't think you can shoot 300 gr bullets without getting a taller front sight.

To shoot 300g boolits in the center of the target at 25 yds with my Ruger KS45N 5-1/2", I hadda put on a taller front sight. While I was at it, I made it a Patridge. Now it is my favorite Ruger .44 mag.

If you are remotely handy, look at where the rear sight hits the frame, remove the sight, and file away the part that touches on the bottom. The idea is to allow the rear sight to go lower over the frame. We had to do this to get my brothers SBH to shoot POA with 300's. It is practically unnoticeable if done neatly, and it's free.

.595" factory sight gets installed on all mine. Sometimes you get lucky and get one with it already on there, but most of the time it is on your dime to fix it.

You can lower the rear sight just a little more by removing the elevation spring

Go with a taller front sight. Are you really going to notice an extra .010 of front sight?

Gun makers don't expect what we shoot. Sights are a guess and more for those funny colored things!

do you have a 7.5" 44? were is your rear sight at? still bottomed out, somewhere in the middle?

front sight is 17 bucks shipped from brownells. pretty cost effective.

I have a 7.5" Super, but have never shot it on paper to see where the sights would be. One of these days I'll cut it down, then sight it in. But, on my 4 5/8" Rugers the rear sight bottomed still shot high, like yours. With the new sight installed, the rear sight is close to the middle of the adjustment range. If the rear sight is too high for your tastes, you can always file a bit off the top of the .595" sight once installed.

Now, be warned the solder Ruger uses is stout and requires a good bit of heat to break it loose. You will discolor the blue slightly when you change it. Notice the discoloration in my picture above.

I love the stainless guns, sights are screwed on and they are cheap from Ruger.

Becasue it's brazed, not soldered. Higher strength/higher melting temp material.
