I've got a 3 groove PacNor barreled Remington 722 with a 1 in 12 twist and am starting to have some degree of success with the RCBS 95 grain mold. A shooting buddy made me a tapered die that lets me reduce the front driving band to .2415 which permits it to be seated with the gas check at the base of the neck. So far IMR 4895 in doses between 19.8 and 20.7 grains are showing some promise. Groups pictured are 10 shots @ 100 yards.72451

looks great Herb, any idea of the speed? You might be able to get one of those preannual big bucks on Bakers flat just east of Hoovers Outfitting come fall.

No idea on velocity, but I'll venture over 2000FPS. I'll chronograph them next time. Rockwood's a little out of my area.......I live in Latrobe, but do some traveling to gunshops up the mountain.

Well. I had the opportunity to chrono the loads this evening. I just shot 5 shot strings......results as follows:

20.2 gr of IMR 4895, 1982 FPS avg, ES 58.6, SD 23.4
20.4 gr of IMR 4895, 2005 FPS avg, ES 51.5, SD 20.3
20.6 gr of IMR 4895, 2022 FPS avg, ES 30.2, SD 11.1
20.8 gr of IMR 4895, 2087 FPS avg, ES 91.0, SD 38.8
21.0 gr of IMR 4895, 2091 FPS avg, ES 45.1, SD 16.3

Think I'll keep going up and see what happens................

Well keep it coming. Maybe you can save me some work. I am fooling with a 6.5tcu pretty much the same only an AI type case.
I played with some imr 4895 and have switched to aa 2015. The imr went from unburnt powder to pressure signs. Flattened primers and of all things a lead star at the crown rather than a lube star. No leading in the bore. I thought about smearing some lee mule snot on the bore rider.
2015 has not been shot enough to comment on.

Well, the chronograph god frowned upon me last evening.....I couldn't get good readings except on target #4........which averaged 2049FPS, extreme spread of 30.5 and standard deviation of 12.4 but it also had the flyer at 10 0 clock. Anyway the group sizes are as follows with IMR 4895:

Target 1 20.6 gr 1.100"
Target 2 20.8 gr .934"
Target 3 21.0 gr 1.356"
Target 4 21.2 gr 2.669"........4 in .714"
Target 5 21.4 gr .724"
Target 6 21.6 gr .968"
Target 7 21.8 gr 1.039"
Target 8 22.0 gr 3.088"........4 in 1.454"

Hopefully, I'll get the chrono up and running again!

Also, no evidence of leading or unburned powder. I've only been using Hoppes#9 and a brass brush...........using about 7 patches start to finish.

IMR 4895 once more...........
Target #1 21.2Grains 1.231" 9 in .910"
Target #2 21.2 Grains 3.713" 8 in .966" with dacron filler
Target #3 21.4 Grains 2.156" 7 in .671"
Target #4 21.4 Grains 2.739" 8 in 1.090" with dacron filler

The wind came up on me with targets 3&4 which I believe accounts for the horizontal dispersion, as for the fliers my inspection procedure need to be amended! I think with a little work I can get average group sizes under 1.00" for 10 shots @ 100 yards. Testing is suspended until the fall as this rifle is also in my varmint hunting battery............so no more cast for a while.

101618Back to the 6x45, I'm settling in on 20.4 grains of IMR4895. A buddy suggested I try shooting some boolits with the exposed lube groove unlubed as there is some school of thought about too much lube left in the bore causing flyers as the bore purges itself of excess lube. As this is a 3 groove barrel I decided to give it a try. Both groups were shot using the above powder charge. The bottom group was fired first using a naked exposed lube groove and the top target was shot with both grooves lubed. The naked groove group measures 1.532" with the flyer and .803" for the remaining 9 shots. The lubed groove group measures 1.200 with the flyer and .901" for the remaining 9 shots. Groups were shot @ 100 yards.
Testing will continue..........

I am going to have to get me a bolt gun in this caliber! Still got dies, molds, and brass left over from my 6x45 AR experiment. I'd settle for a Handi-rifle (about all I can afford!). I also have all the makings for a 6mm/30-40AI. Decisions, decisions. Keep slinging lead!
