I am trying to work out what buckshot would stack in layers of 3 inside a brass 410 case.

The nominal inside diameter for magtech hulls is .430" I think.

Well, I can tell you .177 dia BB shot stacks in layers of 4

I would look at T shot

Okay,
By my calculation, #4 buck will stack in layers of 3 in your .430" brass hulls

Well, I just tried that with some magtech hulls and #4 buck... it didn't fit worth a darn, too big. Maybe F shot would work better....

I tried BB and it DOES go in rows of 4, with a neat hole up the centre.

Hummmm
I will have to get my hands on some #4 buck to try it.

When I was looking for shot sizes, F did like the safe bet.

Ya'll are not talking buckshot. #4 buck diameter is .240 inches and is the smallest size considered "buckshot." You might look at 3 - 4 000 buckshot (.360 diameter) stacked one on top of the other. Federal has a 3" shell with 5 pellets and a 2 1/2 " with 4. Awesome load out of full choke .410

what is the weight of a single #4 buck pellet?

the 00 buck i cast out my lee mold is about 50 or 55, i cant recall.

but anyway, my point is, to stay with the name "buck shot" is a .24 caliber, or in the case of "F" shot, wich might be chosen by the OP,
are they enough to kill a deer?

i love to make interesteing loads for my girlfriends cylinder bore 410 shotgun, so i load a "buck shot" load with 3 .41 cal round balls.

I have seen a lot of deer die with one 00 buck. I don't know what velocity you can get from a 410 with 3 or 4 000 buck but if you can equal 12 ga velocity, each pellet should have the same effect as one fired from a 12 ga. Without patterning I couldn't say if the shot would hold a tighter pattern because it was coming out of a tight tube in single file as opposed to coming out as a group in a 12 ga. I would think you would get less dispersion from the 410. I loaded some hot 12 ga loads with I believe 8 00 a few years ago and dropped deer at ranges well beyond what the armchair experts claim . A 40 cal. ball at 1500 would be a deadly projectile. Two would be twice that. I don't know what velocity you can get from a 410 without using a brass rifle case with a thicker head, but it will kill a deer. How far away would depend on the velocity and pattern density. It wouldn't be my first choice, but if it was all I had, I could make it work.

I don't want to hijack this thread,
But I do have my own that I started that discusses velocities I achieved with my .40 cal round ball 410 loads

Hogtamer, More that one source considers B, BB, F, and T as buckshot in addition to 000- 4 buckshot sizes. Makes you wonder about all the other letters and No 2 Buck of which never have I heard nor read..... FWIW My Grandfather who was a surpassing fine woodsman considered BB the ideal size for deer(probably worth noting that he hunted in the Florida Everglades so the deer were not large)

What's the average weight of a roo?

50 kilos?

I think lead Fshot, or even lead BB should would be fine.

he western grey kangaroo is one of the largest kangaroos in Australia. It weighs 28–54 kg and its length is 0.84–1.1m with a 80–100 cm tail, standing approximately 1.3m tall.[3] It exhibits sexual dimorphism with the male up to twice the size of female. It has thick, coarse fur with colour ranging from pale grey to brown; its throat, chest and belly have a paler colour.[4] It feeds at night, mainly on grasses but also on leafy shrubs and low trees. It has a nickname stinker because mature males have a distinctive curry-like odour.[5]

Well, would say that "F" shot stacked in layers if 3 should work just fine.
Size F is .22" with 40 pellets per oz
Or, if you went to BB shot, at .18" diameter, and 72 pellets per oz
