Have you seen the postings on rocket hub for 80% ar lowers, going for $35 and up has anyone tried this site and are they legit?

You will need a milling machine to finish one.

Looking around the web Rocket Hub seems legit but no idea on the actual manufacture. Hopefully someone else knows something about them. Looks like the offer is done now.

I ordered two lowers from one of three offering them the first of May. I just got an email today saying the funding was complete and I should receive the lowers mid June. A milling machine is not necessary just a decent drill press. The one I ordered ships with jigs to complete the machining.

I just got an email from precision arms, he is doing the AR and 10/22, but they are running the AR's first. Anyway, since I was his first funder of the project he's going to send me his first production ready prototype to get my input. He says I'll have the AR receiver in hand sometime next week. Just need a jig now, I ordered one from another project, but who knows how long till that shows up.

He just sent me photos of the receiver back from anodizing, this is what he's going to send out to me tomorrow. He's waiting on delivery of the aluminum, and my feedback, then production starts.

Question
Using one of the commercially available jigs, can the average Joe truly use just a drill press and drill bits to complete the lower?

That right shelf needs to be cut at a 45 or dropped down a bit. It will not allow the dust cover to fully drop in its current form. Glad someone here got the first one. I ordered from several of the funding projects including this one. I think I was the last one. Ordered a 10/22 receiver. I have already done a 10/22 razor and have the jig, and bits so this should take under an hour of work to complete. There was one that I pulled my money from, but it was not soon after that his funding project got pulled from RH.

boltons75
06-22-2013, 11:55 PM
He's changing the pivot pin detent housing, I think that's what it's called, and cutting it to a 45. He gave me the option of the current in the photo, or the final design. I'm waiting on his final prototype to return from anodizing. He's shipping it next week when he gets it back. I'll post pics when I get it, and pics of the machining process, and of the lower assembly.

I've got the lower and the jig showing up next week, I just need to pick up a couple of end mill bits in the correct size. I'm using my bench top drill press with a cross slide vise on it. I'll let you know how it all works out.

Please share a photo, I'd love to see what to expect. I bought into the deal when it was only 300% overfunded. It closed over 1000% overfunded. I sure hope it goes well for Pebble Peak and they get the boost they wanted, assuming they deserve it.

The lower I'm receiving is from precision mfg. I funded the others also, but precision seems to be the only one running prototypes so far.

I'll probably give NW some money for uppers since I have 6 on the way from 3 different campaigns. Precision had an issue with the shop that was doing his anodizing, he got the second batch, the one with the final prototype he was going to send me, back with them all looking like ****, he had to send them back to get finished correctly. He's decided to go with a different shop now that has more experience with AR's.

Well he just started their first steps with the bulk order of aluminum they got in. He is also shipping all orders at the same time. So if you ordered a ar and 22 then they'll come together. Logistically it makes sense. He can concentrate on the machining now, and then worry about the shipping headache at the end.

I just got, as far as I know, the first rocket hub AR lower in the mail today. Initial opinions, the grip buffer and mags fit fine. The pivot detent housing and the lower outside lips on the mag well are too wide, .030" to be exact, for the 80 percent arms jig to fit. 7568775688

Actually what I'm going to do to this one is just shave the material off the receiver, then apply some type of gun coat. All he needs to do is to take a little more material off, I'd think it would be a simple fix, but I'm not a machinist.

boltons75

Just heard back from him, they are going to thin down the areas that I noted. He is also going to order a few different jigs to try and find out which ones work best with their lowers. I've decided on this initial receiver, to just remove some metal from the jig so that it fits the receiver. This way I can get the machining done and the lower assembled.

my cross vise is the big one harbor freight has, not sure of size off the top of my head, did this on a low end table top drill press, just put the speed to the lowest setting on the drill, and take small amounts of material off each pass. If you try to take you much it chatters pretty bad, small amounts = butter smooth. Take your time and watch the available YouTube videos on this being done.

I'll post the finished pictures sometime today, feel free to pm me any questions.

Edit, here's the vise I have, have had it for years.

Thats not bad from a drill press! Do you think an end mill in a press to finish the bottom would work to smooth that part out? I will take a second look at that vice. The reviews were kind of mixed so I stayed away from it, and have been saving for the mini mill. But, If that works for the time being for the cost thats not a bad deal.

I used the 1/4" endmill for the trigger slot, then worked from the trigger slot to clean up the rest of it. Only had a couple spots where the drill bit went down a bit too far, but in no way affects functionality.

Carbide, 4 flute eBay specials. The majority of the work was done with a 3\8 endmill. The 1/4 was really only needed for the trigger slot, but that worked to clean the bottom up. I would suggest getting a long one so you can see what your doing.

That and now his jigs will be cast, but maybe this mill is for a small step like the take down pin holes. He did state on the original rocket hub page that he has one cnc and was going to use the funds for another. This is defiantly not what I was picturing.

Well, it is a gamble that I thought would go through, but my confidence is shaken with the update. Fortunately, I am only in for one AR-10 lower which I got in on the 30$ deal. But now I have to throttle back my enthusiasm and should stop window shopping for parts for the 6.5 Creedmore I wanted to build. Anywho, I am happy I will see a 10/22 receiver soon! I have all the bits and jigs from my razor build so this should be about a 2 hour project if that for the completed gun. This one will be a pistol too. These 10/22 pistols are a blast! Way more fun than my 22/45 I had.

Did you get that AR15 up and running yet? I am going to get one of those cnc vinyl cutters to do the serial numbers, and custom logo via the vaderspade method now that I am collecting my home builds.

I have everything but the barrel and hand guard. Trying to find just the perfect one, but none in stock anywhere, except for the gougers.

You've done a razor build, how did you do the barrel hole. Drill press or a mill?

I may have to get ahold of you if you do get a cnc vinyl cutter, I have some designs, and serial numbers that I want to salt water etch onto the receivers.

If you go look at the PP funding site, he posted an update stating his other "mills" are in storage. Funny thing is, when the campaign started he claimed to have an existing machine shop, with a cnc mill.

I did the barrel hole with a drill press, and a bit very carefully. It came out perfect, but that was the most stress I have ever had with drilling one hole. I will do this one on the press again, but I will turn the chuck by hand after everything is clamped down solid. Last time I measured carefully, clamped tightly, and drilled with progressively larger bits.
The cnc cutter I have looked at, and decided on is the silhouette cameo. It should full the bill ok for what we are doing, and I can get the wife something for Christmas for her scrapbooking. Killing two birds with one stone so to speak. From what I understand the machine goes down to a 18 point font on its own, but may be able to go down further. I compared that to the marking on one of my SAA lowers made by Aero Precision which is a 11 point font. So, a little bigger than engraving, but it appears that that was the size vaderspade used, and it didn't look bad. But, it wont be till after the first of the year before I can play with it. I could get one now, but I have a hard time hiding things from the snoopy kids. When I do have it up and running I wont mind cutting some vinyl for you. There might be a learning curve to getting designs cut.
Art better get it together. His story is changing from when he started his campaign. I funded him based on his experience, and what he said he had on hand. Now it sound like that was not the case, and some 2000$ hobby machine for wood is posted gives me no confidence in his business plan...if he has one outside of taking the money. He got over 160K from funders, and we have a picture of a 2000$ machine? Its looking more and more like grand larceny to me.

Aw, man! As if I didn't have enough projects to do. Now you guys have me salivating on building my own AR! If I do it, it's gonna have to be a .308, though. Thanks for the pics and the info!

I just heard back from the pebble peak campaign, he wanted 3 beta testers to send his receiver/jig to test, and he wanted someone that has been through this process. I volunteered and was chosen, so hopefully we will see something before too long.

I will do, plan on doing detailed photos just like I did with my precision build.

Latest update on the Pebble Peak project, I have gotten my usps tracking info from Art, so has at least one other beta tester, and it shows in transit due on Wednesday. We are still not clear if the lower that is coming with the jig he's sending for testing is one of his creation, though I hope it is. I'll keep the updates coming, I know a lot of people are anxiously waiting positive reports on this particular campaign.

AWESOME! I can't wait to see how it goes for you as I'm waiting on one as well. Glad that a beta tester is on here. I know its behind schedule but I'm sure that is to be expected when a project is 10 times bigger than planned.

According to tracking I should have it today.

Looks good. How's the fit in the jig?

Seems ok, the jig is a molded plastic resin of some kind. It seems to be a copy of my 80% arms jig, all the holes match up. The holes on this jig will need to be cleaned up with the proper drill bit before using it. And there are areas that will need to be sanded flat.

Progress albeit very slow. Maybe there is hope for this guy. I read elsewhere that the jig had no way to secure the top plates. Also it seems his small mills are being used for the jigs ?? Thanks for posting.

I think he oversold his capabilities, and dug himself in deep. If he were to offer the lowers without a jig I am sure there would be takers to just get something from him. The lower looks strange, like it is milled forged aluminium or something. The crystal structure doesn't look normal.

Well, the holes to secure the top plates are there, they do need to be tapped though. And these are not machined at all, he made a mold of what I think is an 80% arms jig, I think this because I own that jig and all of the holes line up with it. They are cast from some type of plastic resin.

I'll be posting pictures of the two jigs side by side, and another of his jig once I have it cleaned up and tapped.

I'll be milling two receivers this week, one with a good jig and a precision arms receiver. And the receiver, which isn't one Art made, but rather bought and sent, with his jig this week.

Ok, another reply, he finally replied to a message I sent him. I suggested that he should mold the jig without the drill holes, then once it's done set up his small mill to precisely place the holes the correct size. He is going to send out new jigs to us made with my recommendations.

One question, I ordered "a few" from Precision Arms in their 2nd project. I ordered the black ones like yours. In some of your pictures the black finish looks beat up. Is that just oil or does the jig scratch the **** out of the lower?

Photos of the jig modifications, the lower pieced together with my PSA blemed upper, which I found no blems on.

That was from my jig, ,80% arms, I had to remove material from the jig to get the precision lower to fit, the outer details on his lowers are thicker/wider than most. The second one I masked the mating surfaces of the jig and it came out clean.

I'm planning on spraying the first one with durakote, so it won't be noticeable for long.

If you ordered from precision arms, he just made a big announcement on Facebook. He announced that he will be merging with CBARMS, and that once his site goes live, the rocket hub sales will end, but his funders will be able to order at wholesale prices through his site. His campaign turned into a success for him.

Any new updates from Pebble peak on the jigs?

He claims the guy that's going to mold them will correct the issues he had attempting to make them. He also claims he'll be shipping in December. Honestly, I would be highly surprised if that happens.

I just got USPS shipping confirmation from Sierra Nevada Arms. I gave up hope over a month ago, but it looks like he might pull it together. I funded his project the first week. Ordered 4 billet lowers for 100$. Art from Pebble peak is long gone. I got a refund from him when he had his little temper tantrum about the pressure. I saw the writing on the wall with that one, and hung in as long as I could. Fieality is the other one I funded, and they have been shipping lowers, but it looks like no one who funded that project has received one. Precision delivered superb product months ago. I picked out a 10/22 receiver from them and it was nicer than the Razor receiver. Whole heartedly recommend that company once they catch up and start doing retail.
