I am loading up Lyman 525gn slugs with

fiocchi 2.75'' unskived hulls
fiocchi 616 primers
40.4gn blue dot
waa12 wads with a 20 guage .125" under the slug

then roll crimped

the problem I am having is powder getting past the gas seal of the wad when loading. Once the wad has pressure on it more doesn't get buy but when loading it does.

are there any solutions, or is this something I even need to worry about?

I did that too.And although it works, its just not the best choice for a wad.Store them brass down and use them up.Next time I loaded slugs in those hulls I used a wad designed for a straight wall...Robin

I have loaded some with 12S3 and they had the same problem.

Greetings, with all the time and effort that goes into slug loading its a No, No, to powder seeping, this is the cause of mixing and matching components and then hoping it will match and fit!

Now I simply use a 1 inch square paper on top of the powder before inserting the slug in wad for 12 gauge and 3/4 inch paper for 20 ga, if you can cut round paper disk of 1 inch and 3/4 in then it would be even more nicer looking!
The over shot card takes uo too much space and will not conform to the shape of OP part of the wad, better to use just plain paper for that!

Hoping it helps.

Ajay

I wonder how much this happens inside solid-color hulls and we are none the wiser....

Ajay's solution works well. I have also tried MaxiLube and wax but they wouldn't look as pretty as those loads with the clear hulls. Those must be an accurate load M27 to load so many. What is that recipe?

So here is the solution that worked and unless something happens when I shoot them will now become my norm.

First I was looking for a way to cut 1'' round circles without sitting around all and day with scissors. My girlfriend has this circle punch thing for scrapbooking that can punch out 1.25'' circles.

Next it came to the type of paper. I tried a few different ones and I found circles made of the tissue paper that is used to wrap gifts was best because it formed to underside of the OP cup best. 2 circles worked, 3 worked better, 4 was to much and added no extra benefit

and here is the final product

lyman 525gn slug, actual weight 505gn
fiocchi 2.75'' unskived hulls
fiocchi 616 primers
40.4gn blue dot
waa12 wads with a 20 guage .125" under the slug
then roll crimped

As far as accuracy goes, I have only tried free hand standing up to 50 yards, but at that distance I can sometimes get a 4" group.

Good enough for hogs and deer at the fifty yard mark. Or an occasional bear in a tree or feed pile. I use to use BD back in the seventies. It worked very well in squirrel season and early duck season (back in the ole lead days), but when ice started forming on the ponds it would give me troubles at times. In MI during deer season and late antlerless, well let's say I have my reserves about using it.

I live in the California valley. I think 65 is cold. 8-)

What have you found that works well in the actual cold.
