This is from the phone company...German Shepard thrown in for scale. It is a lead splice box of some kind. Anyone know what type of alloy it is, and what I should add for .45 acp and 9mm bullets? I've only used wheel weights thus far.

i got a bunch of this a few months back from a close friend. he used to work for bell south and used to use them to shield wires and connections. they were pure lead..

Cable sheathing is nearly Pure lead, a lot like SOWWs. I would expect yours to be the same! Maybe a touch of Tin in it as well.

It might be better to trade it for COWW or some other Antimonial Lead.

If I were gonna use it, I'd add about 3.4 pounds of Linotype and 0.22 pounds of 50/50 Solder to 10 pound of your cable splice Lead. That would get you about 2% Sn, 3% Sb, 95% Pb, which is my favorite pistol bullet alloy. It has a BHN of around 12 and casts like a dream! It shoots good, too.

Thanks so much. The Linotype would be to add antimony, correct? Right now my inventory is about 40lb of this, 100lb of wheel weights, and I can buy the solder. Any alternate sources of antimony?

Super hard from rotometals. I would just mix it 50/50 with COWW + tin and shoot the **** out of it. A lot of folks here shoot that ration for pistols and love it.

looks like the sheething they put on the cables down here where they come out of the ground to be spliced.

4 pounds of 50/50 solder and 5 pounds of super hard from rotometals added to your ww and cable sheathing would get you real close to defcon-one's recipe.

The lead sheet probably has some Sb in it, but you can use it like pure without any problems. The joints are sealed with 60/40 Sn/Pb solder, so you also have some Sn.

Mix it with an equal weight of WW and you'll have an excellent alloy for 45ACP. Use straight WW for the 9mm.

Where in KY are you?

I'd just add some 50-50 solder to make it a 30:1 for casting my .45 hollowpoints. I need them soft so they expand well, and some tin so they fill out nice and look pretty.
