I have a line on a RCBS 225-55FP that I want to try in my hornet,
I also have a 22/250.
Does anyone have any experience with this mold in these calibers.
Any help would be great,thanks

Check out CastPics, I believe there's a good article there on the Hornet you might find interesting.

There are two, if your looking at an old RCBS it could be the mold on the right. Both are RCBS 55 gr 22's.

I was wondering which was the new and which was the old. I have the one on the right. It works great in Hornet Contenders with their 1:12 twist. It's useless in normal hornets that have a 1:16 twist. They need something around 40 grains.

I have the one on the right. My castings are just not good and they don't drop from the mold. I did try some from my 1 in 16 twist hornet and they shot mediocre. I can't say it's the twist because the castings weren't good. There was no sign of boolit yaw as I recall. One day I'll try the mold again and perhaps fix the dropping out problem.

If a person wanted to buy the new RCBS the one on the left how would you distinguish between them when ordering?

I can't swear to it but I don't "think" the one on the right is made any more.

The one below on the left here is the one on the right above, below on the right is the RCBS 60 gr casting .228". I don't think it's made any more either, at the least I haven't seen it in a catalog in a long time but then I haven't been looking for another either so I could be wrong.

Just to stir the mix a little , a discontinued mold from RCBS is a 22-55-FN . I have one that makes bullets at .225" or just a touch more .

OH OK so if I order a new RCBS 22/55 it will be the new style correct?
I have the old and it has been a very good design. Some time back I had it milled off enough to eliminate the GC shank. It is now a 50gn PB and is still very accurate at PB velocities. I though at the time I would just pick up another mold and have both gc and pb but looks like I waited too long.
However I like the new design and would like to try it too. It seems much the same as their 6mm 95gn which I am getting very good results with. If anyone has the mold and is not happy with it I will be interested in buying or trading for it. If not I will start checking availability from retail outlets.

I think so yes, the boolit on the left in post #4 is the only one shown at Midway, out of stock though.

I haven't had my mold out in a long time but I think I remember it looking like the left example in post number eight . I haven't had it out in a long time because before I bought it a member here loaned me his 22-55-SP and I cast about twenty pounds worth of range fun . It is a very accurate bullets and I've made one hole groups at forty yards with it . If I had better eyes and bench technique I'm sure I could do better at a distance . Still , it's good enough for woodchuck hunting . I recently sent the last one downrange so now my choices are the old RCBS FN and a Lyman 225462 .

I was looking at the boolits produced by the prototype mold from a new maker that was advertising here cant remember the name but anyway someone posted a few days ago a pic of some boolits from the mold and I was thinking they look much like the newer RCBS design.

they are super similar.
Jt's mold is a bit longer and about 4 grs heavier than the rcbs 22-055s.
it also has longer drive bands and a smaller lube groove.
plus a little crimp band on the front drive band.
you won't be using it for anything other than a 22-250 or 220 swift case though.
but if you put the two side by side JT's looks like a slightly oversized rcbs boolit.

"""you won't be using it for anything other than a 22-250 or 220 swift case though."""
Why do you say that? I don't understand.

I meant use the crimp groove.
the 223 case mouth comes up to the bottom of the front drive band with the gas check seated to the base of the neck.

I just received a mold from midway , the RCBS 55 gr on the left side at the top of this thread. Its cast 58.5 gr with a alumium gas check on it. Haven't shot any of them yet but will get around-to-it in the next week or so. I've been shooting the Lee "Bator" bullet in my 222 contender 14" with 1.5" @ 50yd being the best it will do. I'm hope the RCBS does better.
Question : anybody know what twist contender put in their 222's , 1-in-14 is what I measure but there could be some slippliage in the measuring system ?

I use the newer 22-55 in an NEF Hornet at 2400fps with great accuracy ad great killing performance.
FYI I use a case full +- of 2520 powder.
