I'm chewing on getting a Sharps rifle in 45-90 caliber. Any reason I can't use the 45-70 dies with it? I've had those dies for decades when I had a Navy Arms Remington Rolling Block Carbine. Half round/Octagon barrel about 20-22 inches(can't recall for sure) and it was rough at about 6 pounds with a full case of BP. I traded it later but still have the dies.

It is the same cartridge, only .3 " longer. Your 45-70 dies will neck size but not full length size. Get a lyman FL 45-90 die and you'll be set.

I started out loading 45/90 with a 45/70 die set, but switched to a 45/90 set ... and I am a guy who doesn't really use dies.

A universal decapping die knocks the primer out, and a powder compression plug in a spare expander die body sets the bullet seating depth. I don't resize cases, and I thumb seat the bullets.

Still, on the rare occasion where I need to f/l resize a case, a 45/70 die set will not do the job.

I'm use to sizing and crimping cases but in the case of a Sharps type action I don't suppose all that's necessary unless eventually the case doesn't fit the chamber anymore. This is what I had in reference to with the question. I'm looking into a 45-90 Sharps, if I can turn loose of the scratch.

My 45-70 Pedretti Sharps turned out to be a 45-90, 45-70 dies work just fine for either, for now. Expander die is the same. Cases need very little sizing, I mostly flare to seat the boolit and then remove the flare. Sizing die was too small anyway.

I suppose this has been beat to death and talked about many times but since I've never had either, what are current thoughts as to quality and turn around time for a rifle from Shiloh or C. Sharps?

Based on earlier threads on this forum and the offerings on their website I'll be ordering a Shiloh......someday. Never seen a C Sharps that I didn't like, just like the options and info available with the Shiloh.

Yep, after touring both of their websites I'll have to agree. Both make mighty fine looking rifles, though.

My Mecham neck sizing die is listed as 45 2.1 and 45 2.4 on the body. It uses bushing to size the neck making neck tension adjustable. I really like it and use it exclusivly, I also have redding 45-70 and RCBS 45-90 dies sets. I hand deprime and the Mecham die doesnt deprime it has a lock lug with a hole for the bushing allowing me to use an appropriate bushing to "size after hand seating the paper patched bullet. I have a C. Sharps Remington Hepburn on order as this is typed. I called last Monday and action was out for color case harding then assembyly and final finish. Should have it in a couple weeks. It is a 45-90. I can recomend the Mecham die expensive but very High quaility die case hardened finish on body and bushings. Bushing drop in with just a slight push the final couple hundreths of an inch. very true and fit is right up to specks. Threads turn freely but dont "spin" in. No play perceptable in threads or fit any where.

I'll have to google the Mecham die...never heard of it. Congrats on the Hepburn!

Hmmmm...All I could find on the Mecham was "Evan Mecham dies at age 83"
