Looking for a very light load for my bfr 45-70. my 10 year old son loves to shoot as much as I do he will shoot just about any thing I let him put his hands on. he has been wanting to shot the 45-70 for some time now and I was wondering if trail boss would work for reduced loads. 25-50 yards for now.

I have looked for load data for the 450 gr using trail boss with no luck. If I use the formula for finding min & max loads the max would be 18.5 gr this seems high seeing that 14 gr is max for the 405 gr in the data I've found. the only reason I'm looking at max loads is for velocity from the short 10in barrel ( short for 45-70 ) just need enough to stabilize the 450 gr bullet out to 50yds max with as little recoil possible don't want to make him recoil shy because he loves shooting.

I like Bill's idea. The 45-70 is a pretty docile critter with the 300 grain boolit run about 1100-1200 FPS from my light rifles (Ruger #1 and Marlin 95). Get that boolit weight up past 400 grains, and it starts to thump a bit at 1100-1200, and a 500-550 grainer will thump you right smartly at such velocities. FWIW, at 1100 FPS the Lyman #462560 does stabilize well in the Ruger's 1-20" twist. I would locate a mould or buy some commercial castings in the 300 grain range. It is a very fine deer boolit in this caliber anyway, esp. if cast as a softpoint.

I'm not sure just what I'll hunt with that #462560, anyway. I call 'em "Mastodon Flatteners". I did load one lot of 20 with enough IMR-3031 to prompt 1500 FPS.......I won't repeat THAT error anytime soon. This stunt was almost as dumb as the Hornady 350s at 2100 FPS. Recoil dynamics closely approach that of tackling Jerome Bettis straight-on at full speed.

My best boolit in the BFR is 317 gr with 4759 powder. Very pleasant recoil. I use 31 gr and a LP mag primer. The gun is so heavy anyone can shoot it.
I tested every single powder but nothing is as good as 4759. Unique made the gun a shotgun. Many powders did not burn right.
I shoot 8 different boolits from mine and not any of them have the recoil of a .44 mag.
That boy will just eat up the gun and never put it down. I would let a skinny little girl shoot mine but not my .44.

I've used trail boss to good effect in my old shikari. For recoil reduction lighter bullets at modest velocity is the way to go.
Mr. Newtons laws still apply. "For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction"

Remember the twist rate in a BFR is 1-14 so you could get away with more velocity lose than in a normal 1-20 twist barrel.
As 44man said the gun is so heavy unless one gets up in velocity anyone should be able to shoot it.
Try the minimum trapdoor load using SR4759 with the lighter bullets.
Lyman lists some loads in their 49th book. Should be light enough for anyone recoilwise unless they have a physical impediment.

Lyman list 24 gr SR4759 with a 405 gr bullet at 1258 fps at 12,600CUP and 21 gr SR4759 with a 500 at 1108fps at 13,400CUP.
The 405 would probably run around 900-950 fps out of the revolver.

thanks for all the replies fellas I have lots of 405gr and a few 300gr but out of 4759 and haven't been able to find any in my neck of the woods. I have a few pounds of the tb that's the reason for the question. as for the 450gr bullet any ideas if it will shoot well at the low speed just for giggles?

44man,
What is the FPS with your 4759 load ?
thanks, Bill
I use 31 gr of 4759 for 1632 fps. 317 gr.
You need to watch the powder if downloaded too much. I have had the boolit and powder blown into the barrel without ignition so I increased the charge. I like Dacron filler with it.
It is a hard powder to find many loads for, I was on my own with the usual fear.
After working with every other powder, nothing has shot as good, down to 1/2" at 100 yards for 5 shots. I ran into all kinds of stuff because the short 10" barrel does not support many powders.
Unique and 2400 should have worked but accuracy was a **** shoot. The dice never came up.
4198 spiked to 1800 fps and stuck brass but worked with jacketed. 3031 would leave unburned powder in the case and on the bench but shot good even though slow.
My other loads all use 4759. 420 gr uses 28.5 gr, 448 gr 26 gr, 378 30 gr, 350 and 360 30 gr, 325 and 330 31.5.
The Hornady 300 gr is great with 32.5 gr.
Recoil with any is darn light, it is a pleasure to shoot.
I find no need to go to 500 gr or more.
As long as you know the huge case is just not a revolver caliber and why it works is a head scratcher. It does work.

I don't know why my comment was "X" out, it is a game of chance. I was sure not swearing! [smilie=1:
