I am working on building 2 AR15s, slowly due to the current climate, however I am running into conflicting information regarding converting a 556/223 ar to 300 blackout. [smilie=b:

I have read some places that the only difference is the barrel and others say you need a receiver chambered in 300 blackout or 223 wylde.

My question is if I build 2 plain jane 16" ARs can I later just switch the barrels to convert to 300 blackout? If not what type of receiver do I need to get now to make the change later possible with as little extra parts as necessary?

Thanks

You only need a new barrel that is chambered in 300 Blackout. You'll get good information on 300BLK on this forum. Several of us have built these ARs. Go to the Search button and have fun.

I must be searching incorrectly cause I am only getting brass ads, and mold questions. Thanks for filling me in on the receiver/ barrel confusion!!!

Look for my posts. I started a thread on my 300BLK build last year as well.

Another great place to look is www.300aacblackout.com and thier forum page http://www.300blktalk.com/forum/ There is a plethora of info to answer your question and many others you may come up with. Short answer is yes, just a barrel, but you will likely need/want to change your gas block if you want to reliably run subs. Good luck on your builds. I love my Blkout! It was shooting 110 grn vmax minute of rotten tomatoes at 100 yrds yesterday. Will be shooting cast boolits in it soon, and cant wait!

The only difference between the 5.56/.223 and the 300 is the barrel. All other parts interchange completely. I have built 2 300's and a 5.56.

That is the correct information. Even the standard mags work if you seat the bullets at the correct spot, otherwise you may need to modify the mags (Lancer Mags work well for this and I use them for my 7.62x40WT) to seat some of the longer bullets out if you wish to utilize the full capacity of the mag. The taper of the bullet can hit the internal ribs in the mag which causes it to nose inward.

I just finished building mine and I had to open up the gas port since I have a carbine gas system instead of the pistol gas system, did any of you have the same problem?

Mine is the Carbine gas system with 16in bbl and it gave me fits until I got the NOE 311247 mold.
None of the stores within 100miles of me have AA1680 which is the "recommended powder"
My loads are 200gr Hotcor spitzer with 9.5gr SR4759. My cast load is currently NOE 311247 with either 9.4or 9.5gr (still in progress) of H4198. Both chrono 950-1070. the cast load shoots about 1/4higher than the jacketed at 50yds but the cast locks back and cycles both with and without the suppressor.
with my alloy the boolits drop at 240gr

I have completed my first AR build, which I chose to do in .300 Blackout. I have not fired it yet, but the only thing different from an AR-15 in 5.56 is the barrel, which was chambered for .300 Blackout. The receiver does not contain the chamber, the barrel does. I am currently looking for "heavy" .308 boolits and molds, as I am looking to load 190 grain plus.
