I will be loading some 300 gr cast boolits over Unique. Low velocity, in the 1000 fps range. The load will be 10 gr of Unique and the 300 gr. I'll also load some 405 gr cast using unique. Do I need to put a filler over the powder?

Back in early CAS days, they let us shoot the 45-70 in regular matches. I used 9gr of Unique & a small tuft of Dacron under a 300gr LFP, makes about 900fps, very accurate. Without the Dacron, vel is all over the place & accuracy will suffer a bit.

I do know at 16gr Unique and 325gr FN RCBS there was no need for filler. I ran over chrono with muzzle tilted up or down before firing to re-position powder and obtained remarkable consistency for velocity and great accuracy. The only load that I tested that wasn't sensitive to powder position in 45-70.

Never used a filler with it when loading sub sonic bullets up to 550 grains. Accuracy to 300 yds was outstanding which is about the fartherest we paper target tested.

I loaded lite loads for 45-70 pistol using Unique. worked good, till I was in the tree stand with muzzle at a downward angle. Didn't get a BIB but the deer thought the noise was funny, cause they only went 20 ft then stopped to look around. Added some dryer lint as filler, worked good and smelled like fresh linen every time I fired. LOL

Even though it reads Trapdoors this should be required reading for any 45/70 enthusiast. He covers exactlly this subject in great detail. He's a great teacher and has the patience of Jobe. Be sure and ask questions as I'm probably driving him knutz. ;) Audie..the Oldfart..

A very interesting read, tho' I doubt I'll be into my 45-70 1886 Win lightweight to that extent. I just want to do some range work out to maybe 150 yds with light loads that don't beat the bejeesus out of my shoulder. Looks like some say yes, some no to the filler.
Thanks Audie,

unique will do better with the filler at the reduced end.
I use 2400 in mine and use the Dacron up until I get over 24 grs for range work.
for hunting purposes I use over 24 grs and a filler.

i'm a non filler type of guy until it comes to shooting up hill or down hill or maybe kinda both, or for severely reduced load volumes with medium speed powders.
