Looking for opinions on the ideal velocity range that works good for the 405 grain 45-70 boolit in a 22 inch barrel.

I prefer something in the 1400fps range. Accurate in my marlin cowboy, a bit more authority than bp velocities, yet not abusive.

I am assuming that you still get good knockdown out to 200 yards?

The original velocity for the carbine was 1100 fps and for the rifle 1350 fps.

Define "good knockdown". Started at 1400 that bullet will still do quite well on a deer sized animal if hit properly. Biggest issue is trajectory but then again, no amount of reasonable velocity will make a 45-70 shoot "flat".

I like a load in the 24 gr of 2400 range with bullets in that weight class. It gives around 1400 fps, shoots well, and is easy on the shoulder.

Start a 405 at 1700 to 2000 fps and the fun stops.

Yep, someplace in the vol range of 1400-1500 where ever you find your best accuracy will probably do just about all you want and not beat you up that much!

Depends on the capability of the rifle (there are 3 different levels of 45-70 loads).

Then it depends on PB'd cast or with GC?

I shoot 400 gr cast equally well from 1050 fps to 2300 fps; low end out of my TDs and top end out of my Siamese Mauser 450-400-70.

I'm presently running mine at 1450 fps and consider that speed to be ideal. It's easy on the shooter and devastating on the target animal.

I shoot 412gr PB bullets at 1600-1700fps from my Marlin and my #1, been giving me good accuracy for a good many years.

"Ideal"??????? For what purpose, what definition of ideal??

I use 1750 for full power hunting loads, but more like 1300 or so for plinking. Both are ideal for
that purpose.

Need more definition of the intent of the load.

Ideal as in a good hunting velocity out to 200 yards for bear and deer.

OK, for that purpose, I have had good results at 1750 fps which is much more manageable
in a Marlin GG than the 2000+ fps loads with the same wt boolits.

1700 or so will do all you need. Good thing is that many powders will get you there. And easily.

Try 48.0 grains of IMR-3031 powder under a 405 grain bullet.
