At the title states; can someone who owns either of these moulds measure the length of the boolit it produces? I have a Savage 25 in 22 Hornet and would like to try the 415, but fear it may be too long. I only can get an OAL of about 1.73 in my magazine.

Thanks,
Craig

Craig

I measured a few boolits and came up with following

Mould used:

Ideal single cavity 225415

as cast, .541" long, with gas check seated .550" long ~ weight 50 grains* ready to load.
crimp grove to meplat length .310"

Ideal single cavity 225438 HP

as cast: .478" long, with gas check seated .492" long ~ weight 41 grains ready to load.
crimp grove to meplat length .277"

*note: originally the 225415 was a 50 grain boolit…much later it was changed to a 55 grain boolit.

A once fired Western Super X case is 1.40" oal

Data from Lyman’s 3rd Cast Bullet Handbook:

22 Hornet case length 1.403" trim to length 1.393"

225438 oal – 1.675"
225415 oal – 1.694"

You didn’t ask but I also have a RCBS 22-55 FN mould…I don’t have any cast but I measured the mould to find that it’s about .620" long, ~ weight 55 grains ready to load.
crimp grove to meplat length is again about .310"

Greg,

Thanks a lot! I couldn't have asked for more detail. Now, to go search for that elusive 225438.

Thanks again,
Craig
