Sexy Lead Picture

Couldn't resist posting my sexy picture of 230 pounds of foundry and monotype I just ingotized Friday. It has the nicest purple hue to the ingots and makes a nice TINK sound when stacking my phone camera doesn't do it justice. The raw type lead was dirty and dusty and had a bunch of little brass and copper shims mixed in so it was easier to go ahead and smelt it into ingots than try to pick out those pesky shims.

I may cast a pound of two in my .308 mold just to see if they make purple bullets. The stuff is very very hard, much harder than my Lyman #2 ingots.

Now I just need to source about a 1000 lbs of pure lead to mix it with. I figure that will yield about 1200 of roughly Lyman #2 alloy.

Did you find any bits of type, not shims, that did not melt at smelting temps? I have some mixed mono and foundry type and every so often, there is a letter that is not melted. Curious as to what it might be.

My family used to be in printing business back in the day. I inherited a large amount of mono and foundry type metal because of this. For years it was the majority of my lead casting, as well as my boolit casting alloy.

I wondered why it cast with a purple color for a long time. I had assumed it was just ink staining at first. I have seen a few threads about it here on Cast Boolits, and asked some questions about the color myself,

And a few of my own cast purple boolits. On some it's hard to see the color in the pictures (my photographs are horrible) but if you saw the purple color in person, it looks nothing like roofing lead, plumbers lead, or wheel weights.

Here's some loaded rounds where I have wiped most of the purple color off the boolits while removing the tumble lube from the noses using a rag and mineral spirits.

They cast really shiny straight from the mould. If you work at it though you can polish off the purple hue with a rag or a paper towel, so I'm guessing it's some kind of surface oxidization.

Unfortunately that pile is alot smaller now since that picture was taken....

But the pile of wheelweight buckets is a recent acquistion.

$500 for 13 5-gallon buckets worth is a good buy.

Some typeset has really high levels of nickel in them and they are extremely hard for continued reuse by printers. The printer I buy my linotype from has a lot of blocks (?) that look like metal stamps, mostly engraving and art mounted on wood blocks.
