I've been in and out of love with the ol' 1911 for a long time and had a love/hate relationship with it. Lately, I got to craving one again for reasons unbeknownst to me so started reading in different forums about how everyone liked the Ruger SR1911. It had many accolades and no one was bad mouthing it so I decided to try one. It came the other day and I took it directly from the counter to the range, about 30 feet away, right out of the box did a little oiling of the barrel and slide rails and loaded up a couple mag with the 200 gr SWC and 230 gr LRN. I figured if any bullet would get it to choke, these would.

Long story short, it not only gobbled those up but also some reloads consisting of the 230 gr GDHP and 8.2 gr of HS-6. Out of about a total of three bullet styles and 150 rounds later with three different types of magazines, WC, Hybrid and GI mags, zero malfunction of any sort. I was pleased needless to say and think this one is gong to be a keeper. the fit and finish is as good as I've seen on S&W 1911's or Colt.

Did I mention there was no leading?:)

Be careful there. My Colt Commander is a rattletrap (as are the other Colt 1911 and 1991) pistols I have owned, but lord it will eat anything.

Hi,
There's nothing wrong with the 1911! I have pretty much used this pistol as a life long hobby and study subject my whole life. The problem is not unlike our Constitution. The further away you get from the original design, the more trouble you get into!

I have never seen Ruger's rendition, but it looks like a nice pistol! Thanks for the report!

It looks quite similar to my SW1911. In fact, placing them side by side they look like two of the same pistol if you could dismiss the billboard etching on the S&W. They are the only ones, IMHO, that ever got the external extractor perfected.

I did some tuning on a Ruger 1911 recently and it is a very well made variant
of the 1911. Buy with confidence. Not fitted like a match gun, but very well
fitted and parts are all just right.

I have a Colt Gold Cup that is going over to Tim for a reworking. I thought I was getting the best. Well, not so. I have read lots on the Rugers, S&W's, and even Taurus really seem to have it down right. Glad you got a keeper!

Was the Gold Cup new production or an older one, and are you sending it to Tim from Malcom Ballistic Tool?

I'll be sending a pony his way for a little loving in the future as well.

the Ruger is an excellent little pistol. It's got a decent trigger, but if you want to really love it, get a trigger job. I can't put mine down!

I am wanting an SR1911 in Commander length, but they go fast as soon as they hit the counter. They are fantastic guns for the money.

"and even Taurus really seem to have it down right." Yikes. Unless they
have improved a lot in the last year or two, I disagree a LOT.

I also worked on a Taurus 1911 and cannot say much good about it beyond the
barrel, slide and frame being good quality. IMO, the rest of the parts are quite
substandard. The one I worked on we replaced ALL the small parts and it is
now a pretty decent gun. This was only feasible because the original owner
dumped the gun at $200 after it quit working after about ~500 rounds.

We retained the safety (reworked) and mag catch, plus mainspring housing
and grip safety. Hammer, sear, disconnector, trigger, springs, firing pin,
FP stop, extractor, bushing and slide stop were all replaced with Ed Brown
parts except for a few Wilson parts.

Not even remotely in the same league with the Ruger, IMO.

I dunno about the Taurus 1911. I bought one when they first came out and after over 6,000 rounds thru it the trigger has gone from 3 3/4 lbs to 3 1/4 lb and it is very smooth. Accuracy is 1.26" at 25 yds from a rest. It eats everything I feed it. The finish was kinda thin so I had it reblued. Added a decent set of wood grips and a metal clip for concealed carry and it is a joy to shoot and carry every day. I wholeheartedly recommend at Taurus 1911. Maybe you just got a bad one............

Same with mine. It is very accurate. It will out shoot my $1200 Kimber.

Hi,
Seems everyone is doing a show and tell on their 1911's I thought I would show my latest build. This pistol has a Caspian frame and a Colt slide. The slide was made in Hartford,Conn. By Colt for the Brazilian Army in the 1940's! The barrel is a S&W I got from a gunsmith buddy. Most of the small parts are old surplus or new Ed Brown. It has a "retro" 10-8 Performance rear sight and a Novak wide tenon front that was peened in and then soldered. I call this my retro pistol but added checkering and lowered the ejection port. I finished it with a slow rust blue and it sports Ahern DD checked ebony grips! It's a very tight pistol and I would trust it completely!

May I ask why you use that load, and what bullet you are loading it under? I ask because I use Bullseye and Unique under 230 gr LRN boolits. Accurate, hit hard, and over a 1,000 rds per pound of powder with my current loads. You don't get over 1,000 rds with the 8.2 gr HS-6 load.

I just want to know if I am missing something that I should be trying. Does the HS-6 burn cleaner (relatively speaking), give more accuracy, or is it just the best powder for your application?

I'm not Freebullet but I use HS-6 because it not only meters superbly but gives excellent accuracy in the 45 ACP as well as 44 Magnum, never shows pressure signs, very versatile. I don't shoot for speed I shoot for accuracy and whatever powder/bullet combo gives me that, that's what I use. Witness this group with 10.5 gr of HS-6 in the 44 Magnum with a custom 260 gr bullet.

Check Hodgdon's website. they have some good recommendations for this powder with various weight bullets for the 45 ACP. buy a pound and try it. I think you'll like it.
