I stopped by Cabelas and beheld in the used rack a 90 percent-finished Gewehr 88 Commission reblued action with a what appears to be a new 7x57mm barrel. It has a custom sporter stock to the muzzle with a monte carlo cheek piece that needs a final sanding and finish. It's waiting to be finished and D&Ted.

It's purdy (tho I don't have any intention of buying it) and I don't know nothin' 'bout Gew88s, but this seems crazy.

A modern-project rifle or possibly an older Guild-rifle. Commercial American loaded 7mm Mauser is ok to fire in this receiver as long as you don't hot-rod the cartridge. European 7mm Mausers are usually loaded hotter. The split Mannlicher action makes it difficult to mount a scope but most people who are aware of 1888 Commission Rifles won't hot-rod the load whether its in its original 8x57I or its rechambered 8x57S Mauser cartridges or try to change it from the original iron sights.

I think the South Africans rebarreled some GEW 88 carbines to 7X57, or ordered some chambered for the 7mm.

There's a fine looking 7x57 GEW 88 sporting rifle on this site.

Looks to be a top quality commercial sporting rifle.

Also found a rare Turkish GEW 88 carbine in 7x57, very high priced.
Maybe an experimental or possibly a prototype intended for export.

I have a few GEW 88's but, I had been wanting a KAR 88 for a long time and found this on Gun Broker last year. This is diffinately a American conversion and is chambered in 300 Savage with possibly a 4 groove '03 barrel.

Who ever did it put a single stack 300 Savage magazine in it that I can't indenify. It won't take a longer OAL than the Savage, so, it's not off a 308.

It's all very nicely done including the checkering.

I really like the looks of your sporter KAR 88. It's different.

I didn't get any good pictures of it, but here's a couple. Notice, it looks like it had some scroll engraving on the receiver ring, but someone erased whatever was inside the scrolled frame. Also it has a spoon bolt lever. 709177091870919
