You can also get an idea of the manufacture date from the lever boss.

Lever Boss Codes:

A = 1949
B = 1950
C = 1951
D = 1952
E = 1953
F = 1954
G = 1955
H = 1956
I = 1957
J = 1958
K = 1959
L = 1960
M = 1961
N = 1962
P = 1963
R = 1964
S = 1965
T = 1966
U = 1967
V = 1968
W = 1969
X = 1970
Y = 1971

That protuberance (boss) that sticks down below the receiver into which the pivot pin for the lever is fitted. (Hence "lever boss") On the front of that boss (side toward the muzzle) is a letter/number code stamped inside an oval or circle, found only on 1949 and newer rifles. The letter therein designates year of manufacture, per the chart above. (O and Q were skipped for obvious reasons.) The code stamp is pretty small and often lightly struck, so you may need to view it under a magnifying lens.

The number of this rifle puts it somewhere in the 1970's, I believe. Sorry, can't do any better than that as I pretty much ignore the post-1960 models.

Thanks for the information/ Think you are correct in it being a 1970's model.

Probably 1961. I will get to my paperwork and confirm that.

Ixnay. Definitely late 1970's with the "B" serial number prefix. Perhaps even very early 80's.

I'll be darned! I've been collecting Savage 99's for quite a few years, currently have 12, read Doug Murray's book frontwards, backwards and upside down, and NEVER knew about dating them by the boss number! It's never too late to teach an old dog new tricks, as they say. Now, to further my education, what do the numbers in the circle indicate? I've got a near mint 99 EG with "23C" in the circle on the boss. I NOW know that it was made in 1951, but what about the "23"? Thanks in advance.

Near as we can figure, the number denotes the inspector who ok'ed the gun. In your case inspector number 23, in 1951.

A 99A with a "B266XXX" serial number in .243 would be a 1972 rifle. The lever boss code is irrelevant in '72. Tang safety, not lever safety.

Thanks, I never could find a boss number on it. It does have the tang safety.
