The serial number makes it an 03A3, which is neither here nor there as the nickel steel 03A3 is nice and strong for max loads of .30-06.

My go-to load for my 1903s and 1903a3s is 19grs of SR4759 and a Lyman 311041. Works good for the 200 yard military matches.

Very good looking rifle you have there. How is the bore?

That really looks sharp. Can't wait for a range report.

I bought this with the plans to have it re-bored to 35 Whelen. I still may do that.

Looks like a ton of fun down the road.

21.5 grains of WC 820 (Medium speed) Like AA#9
165 RD 0.310"
Accurate out of mine.
Hunting power for reasonable distance

I had a 1908 Mauser that had been rechambered to 30-06, rebored to 35 Whelen by Norm Johnson of Turtle Lake North Dakota. He offered any twist from 1 in 8" to 1 in 18" if my memory is correct. He had a reasonable price, fast turn around, and the bore was smooth and the chamber correct. I chose 1 in 16" as a cast friendly twist rate and have been pleased.

Dutch-

I bought an 03' sporter from a friend; someone turned this old warhorse into a beauty. Mine is richly blued, jeweled bolt, aftermarket trigger, and dropped into a maple Monte Carlo stock, complete with a Lyman All American 4X scope. I love this rifle, you'll love yours too. Personally, I'm going to leave mine in its present condition. I think the 30-06 can do all a 35 Whelen can do, and more. I'll be playing with 311332 and 311041 cast bullets in mine. Good Luck.

Nice '03A3 Brother Love. I picked up this '03 Mark I sporter last month and just last week shot cast in it for the first time. It showed a lot of promise for the first test loads tried using 22 grains of IMR-4227/ RCBS .30-180 FN and I plan to test more this week with different powders.

JDL,
Very nice rifle. I wish mine had a receiver sight instead of scope mounts. I may get one for it yet.
I will try that load too.

brother- just a thought if I may. Good, nice internal 03/03A3 barrels are not as easy to come by as they used to be. If internal is good, unscrew and save it.
I have more than a few take offs that are just past nice to smoked. If interested, PM, you pay shipping and I will dig you one up worthy of turn, polish, bore, and leave 24" if desired (I bet yours is 22" now) and you will have option of backing up with only danger being barrel vise marks. Gtek
(Make sure you pull front scope mount before unscrew, sometimes screw depth can be issue- long screw, plus the Kroil fits in that hole)

Looking at the pic, I see the barrel has two holes drilled in the top that were not put there by the original maker. Is that the original barrel?
