I used to get surplus powder marked as 30/06 ball from Jef Bartlet. It worked out to be a dead ringer for H-450. H 450 is a ball powder in about the same burn rate as IMR 4831. Not saying that is what you have just saying it might be. It could just as easily be one of the other WC powders that are much faster than H-450. WC 846 is faster and I think was used in 30/06.
I could figure it out if I had it but I cant easily tell you how to do it.

Thought I recognized that number. I dug back and that Lot # corresponds to a powder River Valley Ordnance sold as RVO 62.

Lot # was actually BAJ47289

RVO sent a data sheet with loads from 243 to 338 Mag.

I will see if I have a scanned copy.

I still use it in 257 Roberts and 6.5X257.

those loads look fairly close to what i'd call a slow lot of H-450.

Looks a little different then the data sheet I got with mine , it was a odd color and printed out , loaded mine in 30-06 and 7mm mag ,was a good powder , am not home so can not say what lot it was , only wish I had bought more.

TC thanks much for that sheet.............very helpful. Are you using this with cast loads? Hand written on the sheet says "785 data". Hand written on the bottle 308- 150grsp 49.0 2252 180grsp 49.0 2200 which matches the data sheet pretty close.

Felix I would describe as very fine ball powder.

785 and H450 don't show in my Lyman's for cast. The Ruger American 30-06 has not been fired yet and I was not going to use any jacketed in this one. I was thinking a 180-200gr around 1800 to 2000 fps. I see a 30-30 170gr@37.5 with this powder that is close. I consider myself nothing more than adequate as a handloader so a recipe or following someones testing fits my comfort level.

Thanks for taking time on this.....Dave

257 Roberts, 6.5X257 and 30-06 coated bullets is all I have used it for.

No cast loads, I only use it for fully coated bullets.

Too slow for effective cast loads would be my guess.

The 785 reference is NOT my note

another thing to note is if that lot is basically a variant of H450 watch the temperature sensitivity of that stuff. H450 was known for loads put together at 50F were too hot at 80F later in the year. Either do your testing on the hottest day you are ever gonna shoot or know to leave some ceiling in loads for temp changes. I remember very well a 270 that did great during the winter and would blow primers during the summer with H450.

Only primer I have ever blown clear out of a case was with H450 in heat. Opened the bolt and noticed something on the follower. Hmmm, a primer? Looked at the case, it was missing one. Oh Carp! Those loads were used up at much lower temps.

Yah, H450 was a temp sensitive one. Scary

You have got a lot of good info and I am sure you will find out what it is, But, Don't Risk your life to save a dime? I will look and see if I can find Jef Bartlet phone number, he is the BEST,goggle Jef Bartlet as surplus powder and brass. He is a SUPER GUY, and it is a same that our dam goverment would rather dump it and burn it and or any ammo that they think is to old, instead of taking bids for the stuff they would junk it!! And the Dumb ***'s in D.C. want to know why we are 7.6 Trillon dollar's in dect! DA, a 3 year old could do a better job. SORRY. Get a hold of Jef and send him some good pic's along with a decription of the powder.
Hope this helps?

Comparing the 2 data sheets there is a slight difference in charge weight , I emailed jeff almost a year ago on a question of powder that I purchased from him years ago with lot numbers included , never did get a reply , and in the present time I am sure he is even more busy.
I would use the existing data and load some , looking at the data sheets , I would think the difference was temperature on the day of test.
Use for .30 caliber with cast , as original question , Yes , loads are not going to be maximum ,as you are not going to be shooting same speed as jacketed . Again use caution , work up loads , for accuracy and watching for pressure signs , have fun.
