Looking for available powder and found IMR 4227. I am not familiar with it and am looking for input. Cast Pics has loads from 218 Bee all the way up to higher calibers but how effective are they? Anyone one that can shed some light on the subject would be appreciated.

Thanks, Jay

What do you mean by "how effective" is it?

In 30-30 and up thru about 8MM 18-22gr works pretty good, in the larger cases a dacron filler makes it
preform better but can be used with out it.

It's great for full power .44Magnum loads, and for 7.62x39 plinking loads. Beyond that I can't say.

I tried it in 357 loads and also 7.62x39. Seemed to get equal accuracy and better velocity using other powders like 2400 and reloder 7.

I think I found a winning load in my 30-30 using Dacron filler.

What I do know is that there is a lot of cast boolit load data in a lot of different calibers using imr4227. So people must have some decent success with it

I used it for years in heavy .44 Magnum loads and some .357 Magnum with the heavier boolits. It's effectiveness was outstanding in those applications: good velocities and as clean burning as any other powder. I don't recall why I stopped using it, probably just the evolution within the hobby and the desire to try other powders, calibers and guns. I liked it; it got the job done rather well.

I use IMR 4227 in my 44 Magnum loads to drive a 250 gr. Keith and a 320 gr LBT LFN with excellent accuracy. I've also used about 18 gr.of IMR 4227 in my 300 Savage and 308 Win to drive lubed GC lead 311291 bullets at less than 2000 fps. Now I paper patch my 150 gr. CB, without GC, and drive them over 3000+ fps in my 308Win with accuracy equal to or better than jacketed match bullets w/ W748.

Best regards,

CJR

not a big fan of it in the 44 mag.
it does very well in the 445 for hunting applications with 300 gr swaged boolits..
and in the 22-250 with cast boolits.

4227 is my usual go to powder for .44 mag (rifle), .308 and .303's. It is good for full power loads in the .44 as already stated and moderate target loads or maybe close range hunting loads in .308 and .303.

Check out this link for some uses:

4227s is my primary powder for cast loads with 30 carbine and .223/5.56 loads. I like the way it measures and how it performs. I even played with some 45 Colt loads specifically for a carbine length barrel. Pretty good stuff in my opinion

4227 is powder of choice for 30-06 military bolt matches with 180-200 gr boolits. Extremely accurate.

I've used it in my 357 mag and liked it, but I really like it in the 25-20. That is all I'll I ever use in it.

Right at the very TOP of my list in 45 Colt! An "old school" single-base extruded powder, it's not the fastest, or the cleanest (unburned granules are common, actually) but it is ACCURATE in several BH's I've owned in that caliber and I just like the pleasant "push" with perceived recoil and the smell is actually something I really enjoy, strangely enough.

Use it for 357 too. I just love the stuff.

Not exactly sure what OP means by "effectiveness", but I will tell you with a small-frame 45 or peacemaker repro, 4227 can safely push a 255 gr. boolit to 1,000 fps and still be within safe pressure limits.

I load 18 to 20 gr. in small-frame NM BH flattop (built on 357 frame) and 255 gr swc or rnfp and it works beautifully.

The original IMR4227 doesn't exist any more (not as new powder, anyway) but the new IMR4227 is the same as H4227. I use is for development loads in my Brits and even for an operational load and it produced pretty good accuracy and fair velocity.

Used to use 2400 in 218 bee loads. IMR 4227 has proven much better.

There is data here on using IMR 4227:
http://www.imrpowder.com/pdf/IMR_rifle.pdf

I use it in 3030 for light loads, target here:

There is some controversy about 4227 and it may raise pressures at higher loading densities for poorer velocities compared to other options.
