Looks good - I used mineral spirits to get all the cosmoline off the metal parts.
The wood is a bit more work - you are going to have to wipe it a bunch - let it sit out in the sun - wipe done more. It took quite a bit of time to get it all out of the wood.

Very nice 91/30. It looks as though the barrel is shiny and the is not counter bored. You probably have a good shooter there.

nice rifle, they are an addiction of mine. Break cleaner is great for getting the slime off the metal. Denatured alcohol works well on the wood and never hurt the finish on any of mine, though I have heard of some alcohol based varnishes on 91's but never 1940's manufacture just some earlier ones and only a few as they did not hold up well to moisture and cold. On second look at your pics, I can tell that is one of the worst 91's ever made and will not shoot worth a hoot, I will help you out and buy it from you at one half asking price. I will even throw in two cans of potted meat so we can call it a fair trade.

Previous owner may have mounted a scope that uses the rear sight set-up for mounting so as not to damage the military history. He probably bought a replacement bolt handle or sent the original in for re-working. It is easy to find replacement handles and the bolt disassembles easily, if you want one.

That is not the standard bolt. Someone messed up. There were a bunch of ex-snipers that still had the turn down bolt imported. But this is NOT one of them.

The ex ones will still have the serial # on the left side of the barrel. And the rec. will have been welded up. They will also have a finished rec. Not like the normal war time rec that is shown.

R-Guns probably had them put on. They are not that well respected in the firearms community. They do have a neat calendar though.

Do you have a boolit that you can shoot in this gun? Slug the bore and contact me if you need some boolits.
I bought one of these just after the election on a whim. I also bought some of the cheap Lapua brass (really) that was being sold at that time. Guess it is all gone now.
Bore on mine is large at .314" but I got it to shoot decent but haven't played with it much lately.

Nowadays, anything you can find is a good deal. Being able to look over a Mosin before you buy it is a bonus. If you feel you paid too much then you did. If you don't, you got a great deal.

J&G Sales here in Az. is selling them for $200 I have heard.

An egg style fishing sinker can be used for slugging the bore. Make sure it is lead.

I have a nice one that was not counterbored and I can shoot 3 inch 100 yard groups all day long.

I remember a conversation I had with a friend not too long ago. It went something like this, "Do you think those Mosin's will ever be worth anything?
Na, I think they will always be a 150 dollar gun. There is just too many of them."

Well, I guess they are now 200 dollar guns all of the sudden. I remember when K-98's were just junk military rifles that could be had for 100--Enfields as well.

Well, I took a chance and ordered one from Aim Surplus a couple of days ago, and it'll be just shy of $165 once I pay the FFL fee (and yah I did the "hand pick" option too..). So it's still a $148 gun (right now anyway).. but boy am I excited. I heard once you start you get addicted....

What Came: Arsenal Refurb 1942 Izhevsk (round) receiver, Izhevsk Bolt with a Tula "safety" bolt, all reserialized at the refurb, matching refurb S/Ns. Nice looking stock, bore came pretty much out completely clean (shiny) after about 200 patch passes with three different cleaners and about 30 with the brass brush. Counterbored, but with really strong rifling. "Dime a Dozen" but should become a decent shooter. As advertised but not any more than that... Should be fun... about what I expected.

I'm still excited about it.

Clean out that chamber area real really good. Completely disassemble and clean including the stock. I have a few and one time when I was shooting I was wearing cosmoline that had drip down, also really bad sticky bolt syndrome. Other ones were fine

In reference to getting cosmoline off the stock, I first use Murphy's oil soap and very hot water. Then put in the oven when the wife is out. Set it to 200* and leave the door open a little. What's soaked into the wood will come the surface and can be wiped off. Then another bath with Murphy's. Keep an eye on it wile it is in the oven to be sure that the wood does not get to hot. I've done this with many stocks and had good luck with it.
