View Full Version : Is 20 cents a pound a good price for wheel weights

I have only been casting for a few months and am constantly learning. I found a local small town salvage yard that said they had wheel weights for twenty cents a pound. My first instinct is to buy them all. What say all you experts out there?
He also said he had some what sounds like soft plumbers lead of some kind for 30 cents a pound.

I'm no expert, but I would buy them all at that price.

Buy all you can get and sort it out at later. Just don't appear too eager that they up the price on you.
That's great pricing.
When you sort, save the zinc to trade for lead, to the cannon ball guy.
Sell the ferrous garbage to a different scrap yard.

Thanks, That's kind of what I thought. Another scrap yard in the city where I live quoted me 59 cents a pound. I didn't know what the going rate is. I'm going tomorrow to get 500lbs and check it out.
What about the lead at 30 cents a pound?

dbosman gave you a good plan. He wasn't kidding about zinc. they do make cannon balls out of that stuff.

I bought 2 buckets saturday for .10¢ #. I usually trade the owner of the tire shop some 50 caliber maxi balls.

Oh, yes, buy all the lead they have at those prices.
I'm currently paying $.50/lb for hard lead and $1.00/lb for soft lead. If they get pewter it's in the hard lead bin. ;-)

If you're not finding solder in your scrap, buy all the lead they have first - then ask about solder.

If I could find COWW here for .20/lb I would be stocking up big time. We appear to have quite a bit of competition in my area for them. Between the battery suppliers, shooters and fishermen it is tough to get at any price.

Last month, paid 70 cents a lb for grade B sheet lead - bought the whole 243 lb pallet. Two years ago the price for the same sheet lead was 60 cents
Per the chart at the top of the page - $0.904 per lb

My local scrap yard wants $.89/lb for WW. I'd be all over that deal.

$0.70/lb for COWW here. I would love $0.20/lb. As is, it is cheaper to buy sheet lead at $0.70/lb and add Rotometals Superhard.

I pay $.30/ LB and I think I'm getting a good deal. If you see what a hard time some of the other guys are having sourcing lead, I'd be stocking up at that price.

buy, buy, buy good price nowadays! .20 is what I used to pay for linotype in the foundry ingots, those days are gone just like 3.00/ pound surplus powder

Thanks for all the replies. Ill get 500lbs tomorrow at lunch and see what all he has. I'll take a trailer back later. This is a viscous circle. Get lead. Make ingots. Cast bullets. Load ammo. Shoot. Repeat

I bought some primers locally today (Remington small pistol) for $42/1000. Bought two and left one for the next guy. He had green dot for $22. Bought one of those too. He had tons of ammo at about pre panic prices....but I don't shoot factory ammo.

I'd be picking up 500 lbs too if I could get it for $ 0.20 / lb

The good news is I bought 440lbs for $88. The bad news is I ran him out. He through four or five ingots and a couple pieces of lead pipe of some kind in at the same price.
