This ain't going to help the zinc-a-phobia, but I ran up on a 5 oz. zinc truck ww in a recent smelt session. I sort but didn't think twice about it's composition. What a surprise when I pulled the cover from the top of the pot when the temp hit 600degF and that rascal was perched on top of the clips. After it cooled, sidecutters confirmed, "ZINC".... I think it could be a left (condor) wing plot to contaminate our alloy! Got to check all of them now.

Yep, I've got a whole bucket full of them at work, I separate them on the spot when I pull them off of the wheels when I mount new tires.
Here's a photo comparing a 4oz Zn weight on top to a 6oz Pb weight on the bottom, they look the same at a glance!

My girlfriend's brother in law gave me a bunch of truck weights and I thought I hit the jackpot. NONE of those suckers melted!

I was given about a coffee can full of WW's where a few were clearly marked as Zn like the one on top. However, the majority of them look like that with the silvery coating. Is that given to lead WW's also?

Quit squinting to see what they say, and just use the nipper or side cutter to be certain. You won't be fooled by coatings or paint. In my melt, I've not found a single zn or Fe, that got missed, and that is tons. You can hit the bigger weights with a hammer, if too thick to pinch. The dent, and or sound, will tell ya.
Yes there have been zn and fe truck weights for several years. It sure makes you cry when ya have to toss a 5-10 oz weight.
The biggest thing is, to get them, while they still exist. It's cheaper to stamp them than deal with casting from more expensive material. Soon the ind will make them all from cheap stamped scrap Fe.

YES, of the truck weights I install at work the "TAL" series COWW's for the aluminum wheels are indeed painted with some form of "silver" something?, it gets really marred up when you beat the weights onto the wheels!?
