I found a very nice 303 British in a gun shop on the Oregon Coast
on the side of the receiver was "Property US Government"
then further back on the receiver was some something that looked like a re-import code.....something, Utah
Am I correct that this was probably manufactured in the USA, shipped to Great Britian and then shipped back to US?
thanks

you are correct sir. the u.s. property marked enfields were made by savage arms for the british in WWII. the ones that didn't end up in the bottom of the ocean with all the other guns we sent them on the "lend-lease program" were re-imported into the u.s. hence the markin' you refer to. luck & have a good'en friend, bubba.

That No.4Mk1* means that Savage Arms made them for the Brits to help them make arms. This was my first Enfield that I bought through the mail back in the 1950`s from JC Penny in Chicago for a whopping $13.99! I also got 100 mil. rounds with it for $7.99.Robert

The Savages usually have 2 groove barrels and shoot well with boolits with long, bore riding noses the likes of the 314299 or better NOE's 316299. The two groove barrels are stout in the groove and regularly measure up to .317 inch. The extra depth was to help relieve some of the pressure generated by a greatly reduced amount of groove from the 5 groove barrels.
