I see that Accurate molds is offering some molds that make a wadcutter bullet with one end able to accept a gascheck. I have been using some of Matt's Bullets commercial cast .44 cal. 250 grain wadcutters in my 4" Redhawk, and was thinking about getting a mold in .44 and maybe .45. I really like these for close up woods work, out to about 40-50 yards. They really knock the stuffing out of animals as big as large hogs, and that is as big as I would need to shoot here in Texas. I've been loading Matt's wadcutters over 21 grains of 2400, and getting no leading, but being gascheck capable on one end could be a plus in some situations. I know the full wadcutter design is not the best for longer ranges, but I have other molds for that. Does anyone here have a mold like that? Thoughts? Here are the Matt's bullets loaded. 69871

How do you like it? Use it with or without the check?

30:1 with the check.

Would you like a few to play with? I will be casting a few in 95/2.5/2.5 next week !

What a concept. So simple and so much potential.

I haven't done it in awhile, but at one time you could crimp a gas check on the nose of the swaged Speer Hollow Base Wadcutter bullet and load them backwards in a .38 Special.

The NEI .358-148-GC is a gas checked wad cutter design that has served me well. When you get down to it, a seated way out totally flat nose and gas check in a mag pistol are just real hard to beat.

Any tales of what that did to a jug of water?

Shoot yeah. I loaded them for my mom back about 1979 for her Charter Arms .357. The Speer wadcutters had a little bitty partial hemisphere of lead sticking out on the nose and you could just trim it off with a sharp blade and then put the gas check right on it. That hollow base loaded forwards would turn wrong side out like a dirty sock.
