I finally got a hold of the one guy in the WHOLE state that sells BLACK powder, and he is stocked up on it.

It is twenty five bucks a pound, which is probably pretty good at alaskas prices. What does it cost down in America??

I would check with Cooney's and other suppliers to buy by the case. I know shipping is a problem to Alaska, but I would hope you could beat that price. I don't know pound price, I have only bought by the case the past 20 years or so. That's the only way to buy BP.

Here is a lower 48 supplier Andy came across.

That's a good price especially for Alaska. Most shops if you can find it at all run about $20 give or take a few. Our last shop here that had it quit selling BP supplies all together. I know you can get it cheaper in bulk and I also know that basically is not possible/practical where you are at.

There are some major problems shipping ammo, powder or primers up here, most especially black. I think it usually takes something like a 100 pounds powder on a group buy just to come out to the same price stores sell it after freight charges, not sure about black.

Not trying to be a jerk at all, but these prices are exactly what got me to take a real good and close look at the home made powder sticky at the top of this subforum. It's a lot cheaper, and you don't have to wait near as long for delivery, and it is one less thing you have to go buy so makes you a little more independent.

starmac,
I think 25/pound is not bad in AK. Just looking at the Cost of Living Index between AK and the lower 48- it's easily in the "ballpark" of reasonable. I don't know how much you would have to buy in a shipment to get much better than that. I'd bet the retailer who has it is not working on a huge margin even though he bought a bulk shipment considering the costs and hoops.

Hey Starmac who sells it?

I forget his actual name, but they call him swanny. I can get you his contact info if you need it. He lives at two rivers.

Here is Swanny's website, He pretty much just deals in black powder now though. He also works 2 on and 2 off, so you have to catch him on his 2 weeks off.

I just happened to be in Deer Creek last week and he mentioned getting in 6,000 pounds of Goex, KIK and Swiss I didn't ask about price as I have two cases, but the 2013 catalog lists $305 a case for Goex, plus hazmat of course.

The problem is getting it to alaska. A barge can only carry 400 pounds of ammo, and it has to be seperated to four different pallets of no more than 100 pounds and loaded on each corner. There is no such thing as mailing or shipping fed x,ups etc as far as ammo is concerned and I understand black is worse because of the explosive classification.

If I drive out I can bring small amounts back legally.
So 25 bucks a pound is not a bad price to pay anyone that will deal with the hassles of getting it here and the storage laws.

What ever the price down in the 48 no doubt will be cheaper than Alaska's shipped too price. In your situation. Consider making it if State law allows.

If I used a lot of it, I would consider making it and may one day just to make sure I can make satisfactory powder. The guy that sells it here lives less than 30 miles from where I do, so I will buy it from him, if for no other reason than to help make it worth it for him to keep having it shipped in.

Volumptuous, I'm not sure that word belongs on a muzzleloading forum. Where is a moderator when you need one. lol
