I saw an old video post on this forum, it was an old police training video. Anyway, they show boolits being cast and then they were stacked in cigar type boxes and stored. I am assuming the where storing them to let them age. My question is can they be stored in a coffee can just as well? Thanks Mark

Personally, I like the Costco Nut jars because I can see what is in them, but that is just me, I have used coffee cans in the past and they worked just fine.

A friend of mine brought me a bunch of bullets before he talked me into casting. They were all lubed and stacked neatly with layer dividers in the box. Might have been over 1000.
After I got into casting, I tried that with my first batch of 1000 or so. What a PITA!
Screw that nonsense.
Now I just put them in #10 cans until they're lubed, then I store them in tupperware until loading time.

I use Peanut Butter jars (18 & 40 oz) and Coffee Mate jugs (35.3 oz). I've also used various plastic kitchen containers but they tend to be rather flimsy.

Basically I want the container to be strong and cheap. Clear Peanut Butter jars are an aid to identification but I label everything. I also once tried stacking boolits in boxes but as stated earlier that was a royal PITA. Now they're just randomly placed in the jars. After casting a couple of thousand, I have no desire they be neat and soldier like.

I once had dozens of 50 & 100 round cartridge boxes ... the nice heavy plastic ones; MTM I believe. I still have a few for loaded rifle cartridges but the pistol stuff is stored in properly labeled store-brand HD plastic "zip lock" freezer bags. Those bags are stored in black mechanics tools bags. Got to be careful, too many freezer bags full in a tool bag and they're too heavy to move comfortably.

has any one stored them in surplus 50 cal or 308 cans, just wondering as this has been my plan. I've been storing them in the old heavy duty cardboard that my plated bullets came in these were for 500 rounds but you can fit 750 or so in them. just wondering when the weight above seems to be an issue ( i don't think you would have such an issue with small jars, but my winter cast collection has been growing... I store 1# ingots in the 308 cans, they weight about 90# so i thought about just refilling them with ammo...

I got a .30 caliber ammo can full of .44 special boolits.

I used to use 1 gal. plastic jars with screw on lid. I'd put the cast bullets (.44 and .45 cal.) in them until I sized and lubed, and then put them into some small boxes I made, about 150 per box. That is until my hands were a bit slippery from some home made lube, and I got one of the jars, 3/4+ filled with bullets, about waist high, and lost my grip. Landed on my foot. Hurt like hell! Now if I use one of those jars, it's only 1/2 full at the most, but mostly just pint sandwich style containers....

Mine are in a wide variety of different containers. I never seem to be able to find an empty one when I need it.....

You can store them in anything. I just toss them into small cardboard boxes, 100-1000, depending on size.

Mine go into friends old bullet boxes they saved for me. Xtreme, Bear Creek etc. Makes stacking 10k to 15k of boolits easy in the garage shelves.

I use some plastic containers from the dollar store (I probably have over 100 of them) and they hold 88 of my .460 boolits perfectly. and they stack neatly away

I have stacked in the past. Normally in boxes with cereal box dividers but only those which are ready to load.

All mine go in Peanut Butter and Crab Boil containers until ready to size and lube.

I'm a peanut butter jar kind of guy. I eat PB&J for lunch 5 days a week, so they are free, sort of. No stacking, lube a day or less before loading.

I store them in the large plastic drawers normally used to store nuts and bolts in the shop. I think they are 15 drawer units.

I do not think you will be albe to move a .50 cal ammo box full of cast bullets.

I've been using tobacco cans or cigar boxes. Prefer the cans.

Peanut butter jars. Some mayonnaise jars are the same tough plastic and work just as well.

Empty plastic gunpowder containers make great bullet storage containers.

I use these cardboard boxes from midwayusa -- http://www.midwayusa.com/product/897441/bb-69-storage-box-4-x-4-x-2-1-4-cardboard-white-box-of-100

they cost less than 35 cents each, hold around 300 boolits (200 gr SWC, 45 acp), and stack beautifully--no wasted space. I had some leftover computer printer labels on hand, write on the labels, and stick a new one over the old one when re-using the box.

I use a lot of peanut butter jars, too, but mostly to hold the boolits after casting until I get them sorted and lubed. Then they go in these boxes for storage. I'm getting to where I use the same type box for loaded ammo, too. I have a lot of commercial ammo boxes with trays, but they take up a lot of space, and my reloading area is down in the basement in the same room as the canned peaches/tomatoes/potatoes/pickles, etc. How much space I have depends on whether canning season has arrived yet! LOL

you can you just have to want it... just means no ones stealing your boolits

Doc,
i need to check my dollar store in town, I'd like a bunch of those box's ( the other half thinks things look cleaner when they all look the same. i agree there is no science behind it )

Ya, Im thinking a .50 cal can full would do pretty good holding the floor down!!! I use the big 64oz Skippy PB jars and thats heavy enough!!! Dad always used cagar boxes. they worked well, but most had fallen apart over the years.

I use the below pictured boxes that I picked up at Big Lots for a buck apiece. The boxes are for storing cream cheese. They hold about 100 240 to 300 grn .44's. Stack nicely and limit the weight baring down on any individual bullets.

30cal only. The 50s become way to heavy to move.

I store pistol boolits in Maxwell house coffee tubs. I tumble lube them in 45/45/10 and put 'em up. It acts like a varnish to protect them from corrosion.

Rifle boolits are a different proposition entirely. I care about 'em too much to just throw 'em in a bucket.
I have a different container for each boolit. It only gets used for that boolit and it works well for it. I have a Midway box for my paper patched 358s. I get only une layer.
I have a berrys bullets box for my RCBS 35-200-FN. I get three layers divided by cardboard sheets.
For my 458's, I scored a very nice wooden cigar box with clasps on the front, and it's a dandy for that purpose. I tumble lube the 458s too, but I still stand them up in storage.
My theory is that during storage, the lead might eventually sag. If it does, I want the boolits to get bigger in diameter, and not oval shaped savvy?

'My theory is that during storage, the lead might eventually sag. If it does, I want the boolits to get bigger in diameter, and not oval shaped savvy?'

Man is must get really hot in Arkansas for bullets to start sagging. LOL

I am anal about rifle bullets as well and use old .38 Wadcutter boxes to hold my .30 cal bullets. Each one lives in its own little square of plastic. I do not cast for any rifle caliber larger than .30 cal but the wadcutter ammo boxes would work with up to .35 cal bullets and they stack very nicely.

I was going to mention something about this earlier in the thread. I use to live near a cigar/tobacco shop and they had a large supply of empty cigar boxes that they sold for $0.25 to $1.00 depending on the type of box. The boxes came from the cigars they sold individually. You may want to check your area to see if there are any of these stores near by. They had quite a few of the wooden Goodsteel was talking about.

I use miner bit boxes. They hold the miner bits we use on our continuous miners underground. We go thru maybe 3 boxes per shift, and if rocks don't fall and crush them while on the miner, I'll have the utility guy save me a box or 2 when he dumps the old bits in a bin. Boxes are then thrown in the dumpster. The boxes are the same size as 50cal cans. I can store ALOT of boolits or loaded ammo in them.

Cardboard boxes like commercial cast bullet come in, usta buy some and cast others and I saved the boxes. Now I cast exclusively. Local "paper products" store has boxes the same size so I have plenty.
