I have some 45 70 loads worked up, going up in 1/2 gr increments. I usually start with the 1/2 gr increments until I see how the groups are, desired velocity, and as other thing come into alignment, like no leading, velocity spread etc. I usually then go home and make some more loads in the powder weights showing promise, with this time changing the weight increments +/- by .2gr. I often see groups tighten up just a little more with such little powder weight changes.

Wondering how the rest of you work up your 45 70 loads?

I load 45-70 for TDs and my Siamese Mauser. Thus I go from mild to the extreme for that cartridge. I've come to increase loads in 1 gr increments until I hit the velocity/pressure I want then "tweek it 1/2 gr +/-. If load density is less than 80% with any powder slower burning than 2400 (including it) I use a dacron filler.

I generally go by 1/2 gr if using 2400 but have gone with 1 gr for slower burners used in larger amounts.

I generally have a good idea of how much I need so I am testing in a pretty small window anyway.
