I thought I'd ask you swaggers and not bother BT Sniper so he could keep working on your projects.

This multicaliber Notch die has me intrigued; I'm looking for several low velocity expansion solutions.

What is the caliber range?

Will it handle 224? Smaller?

I saw that it will handle .500, but can it handle .510?

Thanks for any input.

His notching die is used in conjunction with a shell holder. I don't know how you could put a derimmed 22LR case in a shell holder to notch it. Other than that, I imagine any case used with a shell holder would work. Bigger than 50, I can't vouch for. Never done it before.

what does the notching insert look like?

If I remember I'll take a pic tonight.

is it basically an insert that has triangular teeth on it? 6 teeth that have the edges sharpened/filed so they score the outside of the case and form it inward a little?

Here's the die and a piece of 9mm.

Pretty sure mine is solid and not hollow in the middle like yours

BT sells it for 150$.

So it can't be used with commercial jackets?

Cane_man

not sure why it could not be used with any jacket so long as it was annealed first

without a mill, you think one could be made using a triangular file? it's just a threaded die body like a Lee powder thru expander with the notching insert dropped in, and a threaded stop (punch) to hold it in place

I'm a noob, so please clarify. If you aren't using a shellholder in a reloading press to hold the jacket, how are you going to use a commercial jacket?

i'm a nube as well, but i would think that a commercial jacket would have a flat base that could be pushed up into the notching die with a flat base punch that can be mounted on a reloading press, and then ejected with a knockout pin

Yep! exactly

I was able to notched the RCE 40S&W jacket using BXT die and the bullet
forming punch. Seat the bullet on the punch and raise the ram until the jacket
makes contact with the notcher. The same adjustment and precautions apply.
The genius of BT's design is it is self-centering producing perfect bullets.
Good luck.

Did we ever figure out the 0.510" bullet compatibility?

The inside of my die measures .546, so I would say yes.

this one is ugly, it was a prototype, but you can make a notching die using a triangular file:

Run across the face of your steel rod with a 90º double dovetail cutter or go around twice with a 45º cutter, simples!
Lost my picture, will re-upload later.

Here ya go...

Large one is 0.625"ø small is 0.308"ø
You can easily see that the 'cuts' are straight across the face (3of)

I used this type of cutter;

They were both heat treated and sharpened post machining.

marten, looks awesome!

if i had a mill i would use your method, but i had to use a redneck mill and cut the grooves with a file... redid it last night and i used a nut to get the six sides aligned, chucked it in the mini lathe and filed it almost perfect, or atleast walmart perfect!

are you doing a full heat treat or case hardening?

marten

It was just to show that there really was nothing complicated or difficult to make this punch 'redneck with a file' is perfectly acceptable!
Full heat treat then temper, red hot and quench then an hour or so at 260ºC to draw the temper.
