results today with a 405gr lyman #457193. unsized and pan-lubed with a .060 fiber wad under the bullet.

5 shots with 9 grains green dot
69493

4 shots with 9.5 grains green dot ( target blew over)
69494

5 shots with 10 grains green dot
69495

with 9 grains recoil is less than a red ryder. i checked the bore for the all those shots to make sure the bullet left the tube
wish i had a chrono

please be careful, you could triple charge the case and it still wouldn't be full

Looks like it tightened up as the charge was increased. Why'd you use the fiber wads ?- I wouldn't think you'd need them.

I bet it was pretty quiet too with that long barrel.

Bring some along next visit. I'm curious about the velocity, too. Did you have to make any sight changes?

9gr was very very quiet, 10gr had an audible report
the fiber wads were so i couldnt pick up a case and charge it again
im goona try a tenth on each side of ten grains next

no sight changes yet

some funny range results today with the 405gr boolit and 10gr green dot
first pic is with everything just like i normally do it
72077

an older fella was watchin me shoot it and asked how much volume 10grs takes up. when i told him not much he suggested i point it at the sky before setting it on the bag to shoot. move the powder towards the primer as it were.
and the results
72078

both groups were 5 shots

another neat phenomenon, the bore usually has lots of powder fouling with this load, not really fouling just residue in the bore. by the end of the 5 shots after pointing it at the sky the bore was squeaky clean super shiny. next shot the normal way was really dirty looking again.

your thoughts?

I used to shoot 11.5 and 12g of it behind a 340g cast in my TC pistol since 3031 was a hand warmer.

Wow. If pointing it at the sky did that, maybe you might try pointing it at the ground the next time to really tighten things up.

I tried GreenDot in 45-70 and got very erratic results (stringing etc) unless the case was 'tipped up' each time, or I used a cotton-wool filler on top of the powder to keep it towards the base.

I switched to Trailboss with and have been much happier since. Good accuracy, no funny behavior.

what bullet and how much trailboss?

I use a 350 grain bullet and 14 gr of Trailboss. This is on the starter load range from IMR:
http://www.imrpowder.com/data/rifle/trailboss-oct2005.php

And more detailed loads available here:

See attached file for Trapdoor loads from IMR.

Sorry, don't mean to hijack a Green Dot thread :)

nah thats alright. i think my experiment has showed me that the most that can be done with it is have something to shoot when your out of other powders

That's funny, you reached exactly the same conclusion that I did!

Green dot is fine for pistol loads, but I wouldn't try it again in rifle cartridges.

A BC followed me home last night so I was hoping my old GD loads would be good plonked loads. Did either of you try loads in the 11-14g range?

KinkBreaker

no i didnt try above 10.1 grains of Gdot and this was with the 405gr boolit. it seemed moving up in powder was making accuracy worse
it is a great "plonked" load in mine, very fun. im just absolutely sure its very powder position sensitive.
the neatest part is the strong bb gun sound it makes instead of any kind of bang.

This is data from GMDR website for a 405g FPBB using green dot. I think the rifle used is a Marlin levergun.

sorry about the table, I tried to format it but it didn't work when I posted.

I have a hr in 450 marlin that I worked up a sub sonic load for I shoot 500 grain flat points over 13 grains of lil'gun at about 1050fps I use filler made out of he celulose parking peanuts (the ones that disolve in water) just sharpen a case with vld chamfer tool and leave the primer open so you can blow the filler wad out best I can tel the burn up completely in he barrel and anything the do leave behind is water soluble so clean up is a breeze

I tried RD instead of GD this time with a 450g over 13g and its a nice plinker load (no plonkers here). I was having issues getting on target with the R7 450g load after scope mounting. I forgot how far left I had the 2.5-7X Weaver mounted on another rifle. I had already shot 25 rounds in my Handi Rifle and another 10 in my Buffalo Classic. These guys came in really handy walking it in with a rapidly bruising shoulder. I got the last 3 on a 4x4 rock at 100y so I need to make some more to continue testing.

Is 13 gr of red dot kick that hard?

Is 13 gr of red dot kick that hard?

No. They feel like a 30-30. I meant they felt really darn nice after shooting lots of full power R7 450g loads!.
