I've got an "opportunity" to solve a varmint problem in our neighborhood, but need to keep the noise down. I've read good things about Bullseye and Unique as well as a few others, but all I have on hand is Red Dot. Anybody with a pet load for .308 or 30-30? I've got some .319 round balls I can load, also a 171-gr 311291, anything else would be a 9mm or 38/357 boolit and need LOTS of sizing to work.

I've used 5.0 grs. RD in .30's with great success and no trouble. All boolits work, but I like the little LEE C309-113F that I bored out to a PB with a 5/16" drill LOL.

I'm developing a great liking for Red Dot in light loads. Haven't yet tried anything exactly like what you are asking about, but Quickload suggests between 4 and 5 grains with a 115 grain boolit. Just subsonic, and the muzzle pressure is very low - 800 psi or so. Ought to be a hoot.

Not exactly a mouse fart, but 7.5 grains RD with a 50 grain HP in my .223 gives exterior ballistics just like a .22 WMR, and shoots to the same sight settings at 80 yards as my full-power coyote load does at 150.

I shot those two targets at 100 ft. from a 91/30 mosin. The load was a Lee 311-93-1R over a .7 cc scoop (4.6 gr) of Red dot in a Lapua case with a CCI200 primer. They're addicting.

just remember to adjust your sights, or hold high....

OK, my soft-lead 00 Buck pellets weigh in at about 55gr. I sized to 0.309 and loaded with 2 gr. Red Dot, but the report is still too loud for unprotected hearing. To comment on the heavier-or-lighter-for-caliber question, using the same load with 125-gr. J-word and 171-gr. cast (311291) caused progressively louder reports.

Anybody load less than 2 gr. Red Dot in 308? I need one of these "poof" or "pellet gun" loads, but Red Dot is the only fast powder I have on hand...

I know this thread is about red dot but the only powder I was able to go poof in 30-06 with confidence was around 1 grain trailboss. I could drop to .7 gr and the lee 113 would occasionally stick in barrel. 1 gr gave positive exit every time. I believe the lowest figure to confidently exit barrel will be different for every gun taking into consideration smoothness, tightness of each guns bore. This slow shooting is dirty and you must be careful to look thru barrel each shot but it is fun. I tried reddot, unique and for me I feel "safest" with trailboss. Primers made no real difference so I use the cheapest I have. I don't recommend this to any one but it is safer than drinking and driving.

I should have clarified that I did drill out my primer holes with a 1/8" bit and file a big notch in the rim of each. I haven't measured the barrel but specs suggest it's 20- or 24-inch, so should be comparable.
