I just acquired a bunch of nice 135 gr RN hard lead boolits in a trade (about 4 lbs worth). Thought they would make nice low-velocity plinkers in my 30 carbine Blackhawk. No gas checks. Anybody have a load suggestion? Can't find any 32-20 loads with that heavy a boolit. I don't plan on shooting them in a rifle.

TIA, Ken

I would start at 4.0 grains of unique and go up to a max of 4.5 grains. The Lyman 3rd Edition lists loads for the 311-410 130 grain in the M-1 Carbine, but they ran it pretty hot. 4.5 grains was listed as the starting load and reportedly gave 1260 fps @ 23,400 c.u.p. I would guess that to translate to about 1000 fps from you Blackhawk. But being as your boolit runs a mite heavier, I'd throttle back on the powder. 3.6 grains of WW-231 should be about the same as the 4.0 Unique load, while 3.0 Bullseye might be a little softer.

That's not so far fetched. I've shot the Lyman 311440, the RCBS 30-150-FN and the RCBS 7.62 Spl in mine.

Bear in mind, these are not your general, run of the mill loads and you'll have to work at it to get an accurate load that's within acceptable pressure limits and still fast enough to stabilize the longer bullets.

Do a little reading on Paco Kelley's articles as he's done a lot with heavy bullets in the .30 Carbine Blackhawk.

Above all, be careful as this is a cartridge where pressures get out of control easy with heavier bullets./beagle

Thanks to all. This kinda confirms the direction I was heading. Looking for a slightly subsonic or transonic load, and these combos ought to be about right.

I used 296/h110 in my buckeye 32-20 with a PB 140 from an old group buy. An excellent shooter btw.

H110 is all I load in my 30 carbine loads. Starting load with the 130 would be 12 gr. and should be pretty good. ;)
