I was given some Accurate 2230 powder. It was still in the factory containers which seem to have not been opened. I've never used 2230.

It is described on the label as a ball powder, but I was surprised when I looked inside and it wasn't only balls (like when I dealt with Accurate #2 or #9 in the past.) There was a few stick or cylindrical looking pieces in there, too. Not a lot, but enough to raise an eyebrow since Accurate #2 definitely did not share this kind of inconsistency.

Am I taking the term "ball powder" too literal here? I'll try to post a pic in a bit.

Thanks!
Bruce

I just looked at some I have and there are NO sticks or cylindrical pieces...

It is a ball powder, but some of the balls are flattened and maybe give the appearance of short stick powder?...

Good-luck...BCB

It's an H335 variant, plus or minus. Sticks are in there as a remainder of demilling other cartridges with very similiar characteristics, so no bother. ... felix

Back in the 90's I bought eight 8 lb jugs of AA # 2230 from MidSouth
when it went on sale for $59.00 each.
I've shot a lot of prairie dogs with it in the 223 and I can't complain.

Here is a pic of some of it. Thanks for the responses so far.

Mine 2230 looks exactly like that, but with NO sticks...

I suspect felix is correct--that's an understatement...

Sounds like the verdict is it is ok, but I do not exactly understand this statement that Felix made?

"Sticks are in there as a remainder of demilling other cartridges with very similiar characteristics"

Always learning something new on here! :)

Foot note - this is some older 2230 powder, it doesn't look quite like the label you see it on today.

So, you're saying that 2230 is actually a pull-down powder being sold as new ? ? ? ?

That's what I'm curious about now. Doing some searching on this and other boards I'm seeing comments that seem to indicate that at least some AA powders (perhaps in the past, maybe not in the present) were repackaged surplus powders. I don't mind, but I would like to know.. this is very intriguing and would definitely explain some things with the appearance of this powder.

AA 2230-C "Data" Powder was sold cheap many years ago and advertised as surplus powder or surplus military powder but not pulldown. Load data is the same grain for grain as canister A-2460 and available ---> HERE (http://www.accuratepowder.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/DP2230-C.pdf) <--- . I still have a few 8 lb'er jugs of it laying around as well as some of the Data Powder 2200. The can in post #7 looks nothing like mine which makes me think the powder you have is not the surplus powder but instead AA canister powder 2230 which uses AA2230 data available ---> HERE (http://www.accuratepowder.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/accurate_load_data_3.5.pdf) <---. No matter what it is I would not use it since it appears mixed. If I am wrong what is the $$ loss for the small amount you have. If I am right what is the $$ of the personal loss that could occur?

Good luck,

R.

The 2230-C i used never had sticks in it. I probably went through 20+ pounds. I wish i still had some! It was a good powder.

That's the exact container my 2230 is in...

Mine has a sticker on the botton with the number 58307 on it...

Again, NO sticks, but I don't know anything about that, simply what the 2230 that I have looks like...

Good-luck...BCB

The 2230 powder I've used looks exactly like the photo. No problems. Best advice - contact the company if you have questions.

I just popped the top of a virgin container of 2230 that looks exactly like yours. It has no lot number I can find but does have a sticker that says PRODUCT OF THE CZECH REPUBLIC. I know it's new because I bought it back when. feveron, it looks exactly like yours if one looks closely with a few little sticks and other odd shaped pieces. Regards, Woody

Reading this thread I had to check, I have 3 1lb containers of never opened 2230 with the red and black label and the rifle on the front. I opened and check for stick powder. I poured about a handful out of each and I did find some long-gated and real thin pieces not many, did not look common stick powder.

Fantastic powder fro jacketed bullets of all weight through a Remington .223 and various black rifles.
Meters flawlessly. My experience started out in the early 90's with surplus 2230S. 8# jugs for $50
from Jensen's in Tucson AZ. Bought some of the same stuff at gun shows in Denver CO.

In 2003 I won several High Power matches (223 black rifle) using powder from the same exact canister. it meters exceptionally well. Mine had some small irregular shapes such as in your picture. Seems safe to me but that's your call.

Thanks for all the responses. I spoke with Accurate, too, and felt pretty good about it. I loaded up some 45/70 and all was well. Maybe one day I will get to try it in a 223 rifle.
