Had an opportunity to chrony some powder

40-60 Maynard on a Swede Rolling Block, Douglas Barrel, 1-16 twist, Hoke Sight

B&M Measure set for 54.5gr of 2003 CTG

KIK was within .2 grs 54.7

OLDE E..was 50.1 grs

GOEX FF 1996 54.5 grs

all loads compressed .250, with poly wad .060

413gr SAECO, with my lube, 1 driving band out of the case

200yds cross sticks, bench no rear rest

all 10 shots

CTG 1095 fps

KIK 1092 fps

OLDE E 1275fps SD 4.5 ES 13.5 surprise

GOEX FF 1247 fps, made in 1996, I think the last batch of PA powder

The best group was with the 96 GOEX FF, next best was the OLDE E, I won't post targets because I have a hard time seeing Red ASSRA targets with iron sights, the best group was 2 x 5, and the O.E was round about 5 in.
The KIK leaded the barrel terrible, probably the reason for the lousy groups.

FWIW this gun was built in 1990 when I started shooting BPCR, and this is the best it has shot since the 95/96 CTG went away.....Remember the 98CTG.....worse than LIDO

Hope this helps a little in deciding

What did you think about fouling from one powder to another? Anything of interest?

I've heard some comments about Old E being rather clean burning.

I wipe between shots with WSO and Water, about 15%

the patches were about the same, nothing really dirty, just the usual fouling

the real surprise for me was 1 1/2 KIK , shot the same as 2003 CTG, but the Olde Ehad a much higher velocity, which was reflected in the recoil

4060May What was the grade KIK you used and was from the old import or this latest? I am stuck on Swiss Powder but shooting other powder for all kinds of shooting other than match loads. It would be interesting to see a work-up with the newer powders and Swiss head to head.
BTW-the 40-60 Maynard is maybe the most sensible cartridge going for mid-range and silhouette shooting. I'll be shooting mine Saturday at the silhouette match.

Michael.

I been working up some loads with the Eynesford powder and ran some comparison loads using Swiss 1.5, and the KIK powder plus the E powder. The 3 shot 2 grain interval ladder loads and some 5 shot groups. from 135 yards to 200 yards using my .44-100 with a scope that will give you some idea what the comparison is between the three powders. The ES was a little high but I changed the wad stack and it put the ES in a workable tolerances

Chill
I was using 1 1/2 KIK, date code 3910, 1 1/2 OE, date code E1-01/13FE28B
The groups were not as good as some, 71 year old eyes, the wind was 5-12 mph, SW, no flags ..I was really interested in the velocity more than the group...the OE and the 96FF GOEX, had noticeably greater kick, I have some 1974 I think either GOEX or GOI before GOEX took them over, as soon as I get a chance I will do this also..when I first started this in 1990 the load was 52gr GOEX FF, and the velocity was in the 1190 range , with RCBS 400 CRS and SPG

Hope this helps

Chuck, am astounded to hear Ole E' 1.5Fg shot dirty for you! Several BPCR folks having been saying it burns clean, though I've not shot it yet. Going to Ridway end of May for some side-by-side comparisons with 3910 KIK grades. My best KIK data is with a 38-55 using 1.5Fg + FFg - 50 round shot string, no patching or blow tubing. Took 1 water & 3 dry cotton balls to clean the bore ..

If Olde E' equals or does better - I'm a believer
Here's the densities and sieve ratios for Ole E':
Density Test: Three samples locked at 100gr volumetric - powder vibrated and then weighed on a digital scale, accurate to x.02gr:
1.5Fg - 1.0219 avg
FFG - 1.0283 avg
FFFg - 1.0824 avg

1.5Fg:
20 mesh - 98.163% Hold
30 mesh - 0.612% Hold
40 mesh - 0.000%
50 mesh - 1.224% Hold
60 mesh - Trace
80 mesh - Trace Passed
............99.999%

FFg:
20 mesh - 62.81% Hold
30 mesh - 32.32% Hold
40 mesh - 04.27% Hold
50 mesh - 00.60% Hold
60 mesh - Trace
............100%

FFFg
10 mesh - Zero
20 mesh - 8.07% Hold
30 mesh - 44.72% Hold
40 mesh - 32.29% Hold
50 mesh - 13.66% Hold
60 mesh - 1.24% Hold
80 mesh - Trace passed
Total - 99.98%

I shot 12 paper patched rounds thru the 44-77 with Olde E, at 800 yds with nothing more than a blowtube, and maintained gong match accuracy. Kept them in about a 2x2 ' corner on a 4x8 steel plate. That stuff is puzzling it shoots so clean. The fouling doesn't seem to harden up like KIK tends to do, am anxious to shoot it in hot dry conditions and see what the fouling does.

I would surely like to see it done, Kort does it with his 38special lever gun...I tried it with my 32-20 No.2 RB..no blowtube just shot..missed two rams because the shots kept going higher and I could not get the third round in the gun..maybe if I jammed them in with a levergun, it could happen..my friend did it wit his 94 Marlin .357Mag, but he was blowtubing

When I started shooting BPCR the only way was blowtubing, as soon as I started to wipe between shots everything come together.....for Me....YMMV

Also I never said the Olde E shot dirtier than the others powders, altho the KIK leaves a hard ring in the barrel..both cartridge gun and muzzleloaders.

I just didn't seem to feel any difference in the patches going thru the barrel....also the patches laying on the ground pretty much looked the same..not really dirty, but the fouling was present

I don't hold too much with shooting dirty during a match..I know people that have tried but I don't remember any in the winners circle shooting NRA BPCR

If this Eynsford load with the 1.1 inch patched bullet in the 44-77 holds up in hot weather, it's sure enough shooting accurate enough to shoot midrange with nothing more than a blowtube. Time will tell.

Don and John
I hope it doesn't sound like I'm not impressed with OLD E
I am tickled pink with the velocities, and the accuracy so far
I am glad I got some, hopefully they will continue to make it...

I'm impressed with the velocity, but the real good accuracy has so far eluded me except for that one patched load. So far it hasn't equaled the accuracy I can get from KIK anywhere from 300-1000 yds, but I think the possibility is there. I am mostly waiting for a new bullet mould before using the little bit I have left on hand.
They are running another batch right now, it sounds like they've had enough positive feed back , that it's going to be around awhile. But even at that I learned my lesson on Express, I will keep 1 case ahead if I find the really accurate loads.
