I've had these a LONG time in my loading equipment collection but can find out nothing about them - when made, by Savage or a supplier, etc. The box has its original sleeve.

The box is in excellent shape.

It's got the original instruction sheet.

Savage brand marked on dies.

Anybody got any historical info? Thanks in advance.

They were made by Savage at the same time Savage made reloading presses. They were made in the Savage facility and not shopped out to a third party to make.

Savage got "into" reloading tools about 1970, I don't think they lasted longer than about '75. The only set of Savage dies I ever owned was in .243 and neither die was worth keeping. The FL sizer was undersize for diameter so cases split pretty fast and I had to grind a few thou off the bottom to get the shoulders set back enough. The seater plug was so loosely fitted the bullet run out was around 10 thou no matter what I did to the cases. But, other than that, they were fine. ??

I had one of those Savage loading presses, straight "8" I called it, and a set of .30/30 dies back in the `70s. I was offered a nice sum for them both and they went, now I wish I still had them both.Robert

I'm not doubting you, but I had them figured for earlier than that due to the fact that there is no Zip Code on anything - box or instructions - and Zip Codes started in 1963, so I had guessed at the '50's or earlier. But other than that bit of "detective work" I couldn't find squat about them until I posted here. I appreciate everybody's input and I wish I had a Savage press in my collection.

"...I had them figured for earlier than that"

You may be right. I started loading in '65 and no mail order catalog I knew of listed Savage at that time nor do I remember seeing any magazine adds for them earlier than the late 60s at the earliest; all that may only prove my memory is poor.

Those are really neat. I've never seen any and didn't know Savage tried it out. Would you like to sell them? I don't load for a 30-30 now but would like to have them to put on my shelf!

I sold a set just like that on Ebay some years ago and didn't know at the time they were possible collector items. I did get about $25 ten years(?) ago. I didn't have a 30-30 at the time, but of course shortly after I was gifted one and had to buy replacements.

I posted this once and the computer apparently "ate" it. Savage made reloading tools for just four years. Beginning in 1964 and ending in 1968. All the tools were made in the Savage plant. The Straight 8 press is the only press to use a forged steel frame.
