Has anyone put a saddle ring where the safety goes thru the receiver on a newer marlin, got any pics?

I recommend them, nice and stout. You might need to cut some more threads for the detent screw, nothing real bad.

I find it way easier to put the safety in the fire position, and slip a small black o-ring in the detente groove. Eliminates the chance of the safety getting bumped on and hides the red ring in the groove.

Why do I want a squeaker, clanger noise maker on my rifle?

I just keep the safety in the off position and forget it is even there.

They are NAKED, without them! And a little twist of leather keeps them quite also.

Like a saddle on a sow? We do a conversion that looks like a screw head.

Indeed!

Or, "mammaries on a bull" also comes to mind.

Never did understand the purpose of a "saddle ring".... who can use a rifle that's tied to his saddle? The ring is also sometimes called a "sling ring", in which case it's still far inferior to a set of proper swivels. Installation of such swivels is pretty easy, and the end result is more practical.

Of course, the saddle ring has that "Old West Ambiance", or something. It sure doesn't help in bagging a deer, though.

All my lever guns pre-date the latter-day safeties, and also are bereft of the saddle rings....they look well-clothed to me.

I just ignore the safety. I don't want a saddle ring. Don't own a horse either.

Bruce, I agree entirely. My gun is about function, not appearance.

Junior Doughty (forum member Junior1942 ) will even make you up a proper sling for your saddle ring: http://www.castbullet.com/srsling.htm

I have a saddle ring on my first lever gun, the Red Ryder lever action repeating carbine. Although it is quite old the leather thong exists. Now I'm thinking the Marlin needs a saddle ring and a piece of leather too. Nice.

That "sling" attached to the ring looks like a good way to put a gouge in your stock.

+1 Pietro. Some time back I came in to a Trapper 94 with its ring. That strip of leather kept getting in the way so I did some digging in some history books to find precisely what Junior D builds. I put one together and, brethern it is a great way to deal with a lever gun in the field. It is small, light, handy and fast. It was a bit of a pain to put together so I recommend getting one from Junior. They are inexpensive and well worth the $$$$.

The single point slings have been around along for a long time, and are still favored by the military today,
because they work.
