Finally got time to shoot. This is at 50 yards.I haven't decided on 34 or 36 grains,them are some hard sights to work with!

I sure hear you! And the older I get the harder they are to work with. Pretty will relegated myself to cheaters in the form of scout scopes or red dots to keep the comments from my shooting buddies to a minimum! ( They always still have a lot to say tho)

Drop back to 30 gr Varget with a 3/4 gr dacron filler and work back up to 34 gr in 1/2 gr increments. Accuracy might improve.

Dacron, in plain terms, is pillow stuffing. Any fabric shop has it if you ask for a small amount of it, or tear up a cheap throw pillow for it.Robert

My pillows have feathers.Boy,are they hard to find these days.But I'm with you now.I did a google,we have plenty of stuffed animals around here too.

I only have a couple rifles that have that type of sight , they are not the easiest for my old eyes to use . Even though I like them , I think when I run out of surplus ammo and components for them I think I'll find a new home for them .

Using a dacron filler is quite simple and the benifits in loads such as yours can be large. Check out http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?109280-The-proper-use-of-fillers. I explain in detail how I use fillers in post #2.

At 65 years of age iron sights are a real challenge, but I still love them for their handiness. Other than my collectable milsurps, I install receiver sights, but in your case, you may want to look into installing a Mojo sight in place of the military sight. No harm to the rifle.

I'm with you. I can only focus on the front or rear sight but not both. I've put long eye relief scopes on almost all my rifles.

Yes I've tried it.....went back to dacron for cost and ease of use. Performance was the same.

I like Varget for Jwods haven't had good luck with reduced loads in the 8x57. If you got any try Unique, 16 gr under the Lee 175gr GC is minute of milk jug out to 200 yards plus for me. Red Dot also works well. Both are light on the recoil side as well for those extended range sessions! If you want more speed then IMR 4895 is also a good powder.

Does the dacron burn up in the process?

No, it is blown out of the barrel. You'll probably not even notice or see it if the correct amount of dacron is used, particularly in smaller cases. If a large amount of dacron is used in a cartridge such as the 45-70 you will see small particles of it floating down in front of the muzzle. The dacron does not have enough exposure time to the flame temp to either burn or melt.

Dacron won't start fires out in front of the muzzle in dry grass/leaves as will some other fillers such as tissue paper or dryer lint.

If your eyes are like my 60 year old ones, try wearing a cheap pair of drug store reading glasses to enable a decent sight picture with iron sights. I use 1.00X and 1.25X glasses and they sharpen up the sight picture and don't mess up the target picture enough to notice. Saves messing around with scopes.

I already use 2.0 reading glasses, and have progressive lenses for all day use, doesn't help. Tried regular scopes on these but even that was difficult. The LER scopes work vey well! at last , I can hit the target!
