Looking for a mild load in my 9 for Mihec 140 gr boolit. I only need a power factor of 125 for the matches I shoot. The powders I have are Longshot, Clays and HP-38.

I'm thinking about using Longshot for this heavy boolit since I suspect the other two to be too fast burning.

Anyone with experience with this boolit in the 9? Thoughts?

Thanks!

you need 900fps to get 126 power factor ! i personaly have allways gotten the best absulate accuracy with cast bullets ranging in weight from 122 to 145 gr with med fast to med burning speed powders
in the 9mm as well as the 38 super
WSF , WAP, HS6, Powerpistol , Herco & Longshot to name a few ive personaly used .

Based on your experience, what load would you recommend as a starting load for the above mentioned boolit, with Longshot? Was wondering about 4.3 gr to start with. I’m not looking for max speed or blast, just an accurate load for competition use.

Thought I should give you a report of my testing with the above mentioned load.

4.3 gr Longshot was never tried out because it looked kind of weak :) I jumped stright up to 4.7 gr and it works great! The boolits are sized to .357. 140 gr Mihec and 4.7 grs Longshot is my new competition load in 9mm. The power factor is about 143, in my gun, and the boolit clocks in about 1020 ft/sek. It's a bit stiffer than it has to be but it works great so I use it as is. (In my shooting dicipline a PF of 125 or above is needed) No leading in the barrel after several hundreds of these through, and it functions flawlessly in all shooting positions. A recomended load to try! It has a mild felt recoil and is comfortable to shoot. The Longshot powder seems very flexible, the load could for sure be loaded a lot stiffer if needed with this powder.

Start with 3gr of clays and work up. Look for 147 gr loads for reference.

Isn't Clays too fast for heavy lead boolits in 9mm? Hodgdon do not list reloading data for heavy bullets in any caliber for Clays. Wouldn't the pressure peak real fast? I use range mix of brass and like to be on the safe side.

Just asking....

Lyman lists 1.9 up to 2.8 grains max, for Clays in a 9mm Luger with a 147 grain cast boolit--their 356-637. I've not tried it, but they tested it. I.d start at 2.1 grains with your lighter boolit, try a few, and inch my way up a tenth at a time.
