Early war German 98. All matching numbers, $120. Thinking about color case hardening, butterknife bolt handle, set triggers, and a nice piece of fancy Walnut with some nice checkering.

Suggestions on calibers? I'm leaning toward a 6.5x284 Norma.

Just so long as we get to see the finished product! You haven't specified what caliber you plan for.

Can't beat the "all around" 30-06!

Good Luck, great find.

You should build it in a 35 caliber. Either .358 Winchester or a .35 Whelen!

Good building blocks there! Agreed- 30-06 would be hard to beat. But not a butter knife bolt!

I'd go with 7x57 Mauser if you don't want do any magazine modifications, and 280 Remington if you don't mind a bit of fitting. If commerical cartridge availability is critieria, go with 30'06. You'll probably need to do a bit of magazine fitting with a 284 Win based or 308 Win based cases.

The purpose of your rifle might narrow down your select of cartridge. What is the purpose of your dream Mauser?

120 bucks? That is considered theft these days!

What a deal you got hats off to you. 6.5 X 284 is a promising cartridge. Seen it used effectively at 1000 yds as a wild cat round. Buddy went 6mm 284 win but barrel life was terrible.

Butter knife looks good, but have you ever tried to run one quickly from the
shoulder? My limited experience was not good.

But they look nice.

I agree. My limited experience with a Kar88 bolt type is not quite good. At least with the original butter knife design, opening the action is not an easy thing to do, the bolt handle seems to be too close to the longitudinal axis of the bolt, thus providing a very short radius: the momentum(necessary to open the action) depends on a great force to be applied. It is easier to me to operate these type of bolt handle with my palm open rather than closing my fingers around it.

I like the butter knife myself.Agree on 30.06,but 7 mauser and 257 roberts sounds good too.
